Beautiful maid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schöne Maid is a mood song by Tony Marshall released in 1971 . It is based on a Tahitian folk song and became a million seller .

History of origin

Tony Marshall had passed his state examination as an opera singer at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe in 1965 and won a Decca record deal in 1966 at a pop talent competition. After three unsuccessful singles, he met the music producer Jack White during a sauna stay in Berlin . He had the idea to transform the world music Nau Haka Taranga , sung in the Tahitian language Reo Tahiti , into a hit. The song was a Tahitian folk song that was no longer subject to copyright as a work in the public domain . Jack White, whose Young Musikverlag is responsible for the rights to the German version, is therefore registered as the editor . The version of the orchestra Arthur Iriti, which had released the LP Iaora Tahiti (Barclay MB 28.046) in 1968, served as a template . The Tahitian song was adapted as a poi ball dance by the Maori .

Tony Marshall - Beautiful Maid

Marshall didn't actually want to sing the song, which is why he had a drink with Chianti before recording . He hoped that Jack White would kick him out of the recording studio. Marshall had initially agreed because his first ambitious single was a flop , but he needed the money for his family. Arranged by Jo Plée and produced by Jack White, in a nightly recording session in the Berlin Ariola recording studio Meistersaal, under the title Schöne Maid, an atmospheric hit with banal text, whose percussive rhythm is the key to success.

Publication and Success

Marshall first presented Schöne Maid to an audience in the Kurhaus Baden-Baden in April 1971 . The single Schöne Maid / Aus lauter Liebe zu Dir (Ariola 14891) was published in June 1971 and sold 175,000 copies in just a few weeks. On June 21, 1971 it reached the German charts , where it reached the top 10 for the first time on August 30, 1971 with position seven . The highest ranking was finally third, and the hit stayed in the hit parade for a total of 56 weeks. He reached first place in the Netherlands, second place in Belgium and sixth in Austria. Marshall's appearance on December 11, 1971 on the Rudi Carrell Show boosted sales . The single sold over three million times worldwide, over 500,000 times in Germany alone, for which Marshall was awarded a gold record from his music label.

Since today we have only sold 1.5 million records, Schöne Maid remained the greatest success for Tony Marshall. The single earned him six gold records . In January 1972 an LP of the same name was released. The popularization of the Polynesian folk music, especially his hit Bora Bora , led to the honorary citizenship in 1978 by Bora Bora .

From Beautiful Maid there are at least 18 cover versions . The best known is that of the German national soccer team , which won the 1973 title for the 1974 Soccer World Cup on the LP Soccer is our life (song) produced by Jack White .
