background

Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen was born on May 11, 1720 in Münchhausen Castle in Bodenwerder on the Weser. At the age of 18 he came to Russia with Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig as his companion . After training and serving as an officer in the service of the Russian Tsarina, he took part in wars with the Turks. In 1750 he returned to his estate in Bodenwerder and took care of the prosperity of his estate until he died on February 22, 1797. Baron von Münchhausen was already known and widely loved as a brilliant and humorous storyteller at his table during his lifetime.

Dedicated to his honor and memory, the Lower Saxon town of Bodenwerder ( Holzminden district ) awards the prize to personalities who have presented themselves literarily, dramatically or artistically in the spirit of the baron or who are active in this way. In front of the town hall in Bodenwerder, a stone slab is set in the pavement for each award winner bearing the name and the year of award.
