Horst Friedrich Mayer

Horst Friedrich Mayer "HFM" (born November 28, 1936 in Vienna ; † May 23, 2003 ibid) was an Austrian historian, journalist and television presenter for Austrian radio . He was known as "Mr. Zeit im Bild “known.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1954, Mayer first studied law (Jus) at the University of Vienna at the Albertgasse secondary school in Vienna's 8th district ( Josefstadt ) . After passing the state examination in law and history , he studied modern and ancient history . In 1962, he was with a dissertation on "The Imperial and Royal Navy from 1912 to 1914 under the command of Admiral Anton Haus " to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1962 he worked as a journalist: first for the Austria edition of the German program magazine Hörzu , in the same year he switched to the weekly newspaper Die Furche . In 1967 he was its deputy editor-in-chief. Then he was editor-in-chief of the Salzburger Volkszeitung . In 1970 he became a specialist editor and reporter in the current service department of the ORF radio . In 1972 he switched to television. There he became the chief editor or head of department for foreign policy in 1974, deputy editor-in-chief in 1980 and finally editor-in-chief of the current service at ORF television in 1986 and at the same time chief presenter. For more than two decades, Mayer (from 1995 with Danielle Spera ) moderated the main daily news program Zeit im Bild 1 at 7.30 p.m. His last time in the picture he presented on New Year's Eve 1997. He also presented several issues of Club2 and was chief commentator of the Vienna Opera Ball on ORF. After that he was active for several years as a presenter of the ORF broadcasts Body and Soul and Home . In 2001 he retired.

From 2000 he was the journalistic director of the Catholic Media Academy (KMA) in Vienna. He also published several non-fiction books on naval history and the history of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy as well as media education .

Mayer was married and the father of three children a. a. the actor Max Mayer (* 1974); he lived in Brunn am Gebirge and Grundlsee .

His grave is in the Brunn am Gebirge cemetery , Lower Austria.
