Life

Karl Ridderbusch made his debut in Münster in 1961. From 1963 to 1965 he was a permanent member of the Essen ensemble. During this three-year engagement he took on the great operatic roles from the works of Wagner, Strauss and Verdi, which quickly helped him to considerable fame. In 1965 he became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg (Sparafucile, Boris Godunow, Hunding). In 1967 he made his debut in Bayreuth , from where his international career began. Until 1977, when he left Bayreuth in a dispute with the festival management, he sang all the important roles in his subject at the Green Hill, including a. Heinrich der Vogler, Hans Sachs, König Marke, Hagen, Daland and Hunding, but also smaller parts such as Titurel, Fasolt, Fafner and Pogner.

At other houses he also played the ox on Lerchenau, Monteverdi's Seneca, Donizetti's Henry VIII, Verdis and Nicolais Falstaff, Flotow's Plumkett, Cornelius' barber of Baghdad, Cardinal Madruscht in Palestrina and sang numerous oratorios by Bach and Bruckner. He was a regular guest in all the major opera houses in the world: La Scala ( Milan , debut 1966), Metropolitan Opera (New York, from 1967), Wiener Staatsoper (from 1968, Kammersänger since 1978), Royal Opera House Covent Garden (London, from 1971 ), Paris (since 1967), also in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and at the Salzburg Easter Festival (from 1968).

successes

Karl Ridderbusch had a full-bodied voice of the highest expressiveness paired with technical skill; it spanned two octaves and made him one of the most famous vocalists of his time. In the opera house his voice easily penetrated the most powerful orchestra, with great brilliance he maintained his belcanto-like sound even in loud passages. In addition to his musical finesse, the powerfully built singer made an impressive impression on the opera stage. Among his most important roles are the ox in Rosenkavalier, Hunding in Walküre or Hagen in Götterdämmerung. Ridderbusch, however, was not closed to the light muse either and liked to sing operettas and folk songs , which made him known to a wide audience.

Karl Ridderbusch was married to an Austrian from Wels. He died of severe heart disease and liver failure at the age of 65 after returning home from the Wels hospital the day before.
