Christel Sembach-Krone (1959)

Christel Sembach-Krone (born November 27, 1936 - † June 20, 2017 in Munich ) was director of the largest traveling circus in Europe.

Life

Christel Sembach-Krone was the daughter of Carl Sembach (1908–1984) and Frieda Sembach-Krone (1915–1995). She has directed the Circus Krone since 1995 . Krone is the only European circus that has a permanent, playable winter building : the Kronebau in Munich with around 3000 seats. The circus performs there from November to March, and in summer the building is rented out for concerts and events. During this time the Circus Krone is traveling with its tent - the largest in Europe with seating for 4500 spectators.

Christel Sembach-Krone performed in her circus from 1956 to 2006 and demonstrated horses. In younger years she rode dressage and showed freedom dressage , later she only performed the freedom dressage . In 2007 she retired and handed over the horse training to her adopted daughter Jana Mandana Lacey-Krone . She is also the creator of the Krone programs, which offer many artistic and circus attractions. Since the mid-1990s, she has worked with the American choreographer Gene Reed .

From 2014 Christel Sembach-Krone could no longer perform himself because of a hip problem. The staff converted a golf cart for her boss so that she could drive around her circus. It was also approved for road traffic.

In 2006, the German authorities fined Christel Sembach-Krone € 2,500 for violating animal welfare law. Sembach-Krone appealed against this fine, which led to the fact that it was sentenced in 2009 by the competent local court to a fine of 1,000 euros. Several points were negotiated during the process, only two of which were rated as applicable. It was a lack of activity material for the elephants and a lack of exercise for the horses. The animal rights organization PETA claims "February 2009: Circus director Christel Sembach-Krone is convicted of cruelty to animals " , but the document uploaded by PETA itself shows a verdict of what happened according to § 18 TierSchG (administrative offense) - and not because of the offense "cruelty to animals" according to § 17 TierSchG. At the time the verdict was announced, a new and larger horse stable had already been ordered and was put into operation a few weeks later. A permit from the Munich Veterinary Office that was valid up to and including 2009 was also available for the previous animal husbandry.

In the years that followed, animal rights organizations sued Christel Sembach-Krone several times, as she also sued against the animal rights activists. In 2012 Sembach-Krone won against the animal rights organization PETA. Accordingly, Circus Krone can continue to claim that the PETA activists “do not shrink from crimes” during their protests.

Christel Sembach-Krone was unmarried and childless. She adopted the Swiss animal teacher Jana Mandana Lacey-Krone , née Pilz (* 1979), who worked with the animal trainer Martin Lacey jr. is married. The couple has one son, Alexis Henry Lacey-Krone.

The then Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber awarded her the Bavarian Order of Merit during a circus performance on December 25, 1998 .

In 1999 Christel Sembach-Krone received the Great Federal Cross of Merit for her social commitment and her life's work . In the Munich district of Aubing-Lochhausen-Langwied , a street was named after her in 2019.
