Margit Sponheimer (born February 7, 1943 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German singer and actress . The honorary citizen of Mainz was best known for her appearances at the Mainz Carnival .

Life

Margit Sponheimer learned to play the accordion and piano and received a vocal training . After finishing school, she first did a commercial apprenticeship.

In 1959 she made her first appearance at the Mainz Carnival. With her mood songs she became a permanent guest and in 1969 she had her great success with Am Rosenmontag I am born , composed by Charly Niessen . The song is one of the evergreens of carnival hits . In reality, the message of the song is true but not on Margit Sponheim to, because in their birth year fell Carnival Monday on March 8.

Numerous other titles also became hits. In addition to solo chants, she also sang in duets with Ernst Neger and others. During her appearances she was soon nicknamed "'s Margitsche". Since 1961 she has been a member of the Princess's Mainz Guard .

She is also known as an actress and has repeatedly seen her on stage. For example, she regularly appeared in folk plays at the Volkstheater in Frankfurt . Among other things, she also played Miss Sophie in the television recording of the Hessian version of Dinner for One .

Sponheimer made a guest appearance in three episodes of the series The Fallers in 2008 . In 2013 she received the Saumagen medal . From 2006 to 2017 she played in the musical Feucht & Fröhlich in the Lower House of Mainz .

She lives in the rural and winegrowing community of Ober-Olm in Rhineland-Hesse .

In February 2020, she announced that she would no longer perform as an active fast night worker and that the 2019/2020 campaign would mark the end of her active time as a fast night worker.

Honors

On September 5, 2007 she received the Federal Cross of Merit from the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Kurt Beck for having “inspired millions of people with her songs”, “broke through a male domain on the foolish stage” and “regularly appears in hospitals and retirement homes”.

On January 17, 2018, Mayor Michael Ebling announced that he would propose to the city ​​council of the state capital Mainz that Margit Sponheimer be named an honorary citizen of the state capital Mainz as "Ambassador of the Mainz joy of life". The parliamentary groups represented in the council from CDU, SPD, Greens, FDP, ÖDP and FW-G supported the proposal. Since February 7, 2018, her 75th birthday, Sponheim has been an honorary citizen of Mainz .

Bearer of the "Ranzengardebrunnen" 2020, the Mainzer Ranzengarde has been honoring public figures since 2005.
