Saumagen medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Palatinate Saumagen Order , often shortened to the Saumagen Order , is a carnival order . It is awarded by the Schifferstadt Carnival and Dance Sport Society Schlotte to personalities from politics, business, culture or sport who have made a name for themselves in the historic Electoral Palatinate on both sides of the Upper Rhine .

history

The award is named after the “ Palatinate national dish ”, the Saumagen . In 1992 it was not, as was mistakenly assumed for a long time, suggested by the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl ; Rather, it was Günter Kreckler, a Senator from Schlotte who was born in 1935 and has since died, who provided the idea and was the founder . Initially, only eleven awards were planned - based on the number of symbols used by the carnivalists. Because of the great success and the tourist sensation that the medal was awarded, the decision was made to continue in 2002. At the same time, it was also decided to officially expand the group of people in question to all of Germany, after the origin had previously been limited to the area of the historic Electoral Palatinate.

Award

The medal consists of a 740 g piece of rose quartz , which is cut into the shape of a collar in the jewelery town of Idar-Oberstein and can be worn around the neck with a silver chain. The award ceremony is celebrated with a Saumagenessen, during which the laudation for the new medalist is given by his predecessor.
