Dieter Wedel (2016)

Dieter Wedel (born November 12, 1939 or 1942 as Dieter Karl Cäsar Wedel in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German director and screenwriter .

Origin and education

The information on Wedel's year of birth is contradicting itself: He told the public that 1942 was his year of birth, although he started school in 1946. In 2010 Wedel told the dpa news agency that he had made himself three years older in 1968 in order to get his first directorial work for the film Memorial Day (1970). From a curriculum vitae written by him in the appendix to his inaugural dissertation with the title Das Frankfurter Schauspielhaus in the years 1912 to 1929 , which he submitted to the Philosophical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin in 1965 , it emerges that Wedel was in Frankfurt am Main on November 12, 1939 was born.

Wedel is the son of the engineer Karl Wedel, who died in 1957 and who also owned a leather goods factory. His mother Ada, née Stroh, performed as a pianist under the stage name Ada Torana . Wedel grew up in Bad Nauheim, went to the Ernst Ludwig School in Bad Nauheim and staged his first play, the drama Massada , as a pupil on May 21, 1957 in the Kurhaus there . At the age of 17 Wedel was a Hessian youth tennis champion.

At the Free University of Berlin he studied theater studies , journalism and history with his "substitute father" Hans Knudsen . During his studies he directed the student theater there. He also worked as a lecturer and theater critic . Wedel later directed in the Amerika-Haus in Berlin and at the Hebbeltheater .

Professional career

Wedel began his professional career as an author and radio play director at Radio Bremen in 1966. In 1967 he went to NDR Hamburg and initially became an assistant to Egon Monk , the head of the television game department. Under Dieter Meichsner he then became in-house director. His first short film Willi (1969) is based on Wolfdietrich Schnurre's short story Trolley lifting . His first major television film, Remembrance Day (1970), is about the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 .

In 1972 Wedel had his first great success with the three-part Once in a Lifetime - Story of a Home . Countless German house builders recognized themselves in the fictional Semmeling family, who went through almost all the problems of building a house. In 1976 the concept was taken up again in All Years Again - The Semmeling Family , this time the holiday of the fictitious German average family was critically portrayed. In 2001 Wedel attempted to build on the successful Semmeling films of the 1970s with the multi-part Die Affäre Semmeling about the German financial bureaucracy, renouncing the humorous-satirical approach ; In a television landscape that has now completely changed, the ratings of the 1970s could no longer be achieved.

1978 Wedel started his own business, founded by film producer Jürgen Dohme the Active Film GmbH and so turned directing and producing numerous socially critical television dramas . He later realizes his projects through Corona Film GmbH , where his partner Ursula Wolters is the managing director.

From 1980 to 1985 he directed Peter Striebeck at Hamburg's Thalia Theater, among others, Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Die Frau des Bäckers by Marcel Pagnol with Peter Striebeck, the performance of which was also broadcast on ARD in 1986.

As a television director, Wedel made a name for himself with elaborate multi-part films. In 1986 filming began in Hamburg for his Wilder West inclusive (1988), which was also filmed in the United States, with a budget of 20 million marks, the most expensive television game to date for West German broadcasting . This was followed by The Big Bellheim (1992), The Shadow Man (1995), The King of St. Pauli (1998), The Semmeling Affair (2002), Papa and Mama (2006) and, most recently, Gier (2010). Like director Alfred Hitchcock , Wedel himself appears for a few seconds in his productions (e.g. clearly in appearance in Der große Bellheim , Der König von St. Pauli and Der Schattenmann ).

From 2002 to the summer of 2014 Wedel directed the Nibelungen Festival in Worms , first as a director, then also as artistic director in collaboration with directors such as Karin Beier and Gil Mehmert . In 2011/2012 Wedel successfully expanded the repertoire with two pieces on The Story of Joseph Süss Oppenheimer , called Jud Süss and Das Vermögen des Herr Süss , before he returned to the roots of the Festival in 2013 with Hebbel's Nibelungen - born to die and his last in 2014 Staging in Worms announced.

The attempt to start a similar success with the Zwinger Festival in Dresden as in Worms ended for the time being after a season in the summer of 2011 with John von Düffel's Die Mätresse des König .

Wedel is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg .

Wedel has been artistic director of the Bad Hersfeld Festival since 2015 . His first production in Bad Hersfeld was the comedy of errors with actors like Sonja Kirchberger and Heinz Hoenig . In 2016 he directed witch hunt . The ensemble included Elisabeth Lanz , Richy Müller and Motsi Mabuse , among others . In 2017 Wedel brought the play Martin Luther - The attack on stage. His contract, which initially ran until 2018, has been extended to 2022. On January 22, 2018 Wedel announced his resignation as director after several actresses accused him of sexual violence in the context of the #MeToo debate. His planned staging The Karlos plot has been removed from the program.

According to information from his environment, Wedel suffered a heart attack in January 2018 .

criticism

Dieter Wedel (2008)

As consistently as the success, accusations of plagiarism run through Wedel's work, as Wedel's dialogues, but also entire sequences of scenes, remind film connoisseurs time and again of well-known models. The Süddeutsche Zeitung discovered parts of his divorce drama Papa and Mama in Out of Africa , but there were also complete scenes by Oliver Stone , Woody Allen , Francis Ford Coppola and many more in earlier Wedel productions (which makes Harald Schmidt a parody “Hollywood steals from Wedel ”). This criticism was most violent at Der Schattenmann and Die Affäre Semmeling , where it came to a trial. Wedel later admitted these allegations, but found the excitement exaggerated.

Management style as a producer and director

In 2017, one day before the 67th Bad Hersfeld Festival began, Wedel dismissed the actor Paulus Manker after an argument during one of the last rehearsals. Manker then heavily criticized Wedel for ruling like a “North Korean dictator” who “spreads fear and horror” among his actors for weeks. Manker was supposed to play the title role in the world premiere of Martin Luther - The Attack .

In January 2018, in response to a report from Die Zeit about his lawyer, Wedel regretted that in the course of his "many years of work as a producer and director, actors and actresses, especially on the set, had sometimes been subjected to extremely harsh, probably hurtful criticism."

Sexual assault allegations

In the course of the #MeToo debate , in an article in Zeitmagazin dated January 3, 2018, several actresses and former employees accused Wedel of violent and sexual assaults, which he is said to have committed in the 1990s, and gave affidavits . The actress Jany Tempel accused Wedel of raping her at an audition in 1996 in a hotel in Munich. Wedel contradicted the statements of the women and, according to his attorney, made "a comprehensive affidavit" on the allegations. He announced that he would take legal action against the print and online publication of the article. On January 22, 2018, Wedel announced his resignation as director of the Bad Hersfeld Festival with reference to media coverage. Shortly afterwards it became known that the Munich public prosecutor's office had started an investigation into the initial suspicion of a sexual offense that was not statute-barred.

In a follow-up report from Die Zeit , other actresses and former employees accused Wedel of sexual assault. Among other things, it is said to have been raped in a forest during the production of the NDR series Paris Stories in 1975 . In addition, the actress Esther Gemsch described another alleged sexual assault in a hotel room in 1980, which injured and traumatized her cervical spine. Ute Christensen has therefore been cast in her role, and Wedel has also been accused of sexual harassment. Incidents were recorded in writing at Saarland Broadcasting. In internal investigations by Sat.1 , NDR , ZDF and Bavaria Film, however, no evidence of sexual assault or criminal acts could be found.

Wedel had already joined the #MeToo debate at the end of November 2017 and presented himself as a victim of sexism.

Private

Wedel is married to his long-term partner, the businesswoman Ursula Wolters, daughter of the former Bremen Senator Hermann Wolters . During this time he had relationships with other women:

  • Until around 1980 he had a relationship with Hannelore Elsner , with whom he has a son.
  • Between 1988 and 1992 he was in a relationship with Ingrid Steeger .
  • From 1997 to 2009 he lived in a polyamorous relationship with Ursula Wolters in Hamburg and the dancer and fitness trainer Dominique Voland on Mallorca , until they moved to Germany with their son in 2009.

Wedel has a total of six children.
