John von Düffel 2008

John von Düffel (born October 20, 1966 in Göttingen ) is a German dramaturge and writer .

Life

John von Düffel is the eldest son of the university lecturer, high school teacher and translator Peter von Düffel and the philosopher Gudrun von Düffel. He lives and works in Potsdam . In the course of his youth, von Düffel lived abroad with his parents for a long time: in the 1960s in Derry (Northern Ireland), in the 1970s in South Dakota . In 1985 he passed his Abitur at an Oldenburg grammar school and then studied philosophy , German and economics at the universities of Stirling (Scotland) and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1989 he received his doctorate with a thesis on epistemology . He then worked as a film journalist and theater critic .

Parallel to his literary work, he was a dramaturge at several German theaters: from 1993 to 1995 at the Theater der Altmark in Stendal, from 1995 to 1996 at the Staatstheater Oldenburg , from 1996 to 1998 at the Theater Basel , from 1998 to 2000 at the Schauspielhaus Bonn and from 2000 until 2009 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. For the Thalia he developed a. a. the first stage version of the novel Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann (premiere: December 3, 2005). He is currently the dramaturge at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.

In 2004, Jörg Adolph shot the documentary Houwelandt - A novel is created with John von Düffel , which was broadcast on 3sat in 2005 .

In 2006 von Düffel was a member of the jury that awards the German Book Prize. In 2007 he was on the jury of the Mara Cassens Prize of the Hamburg Literature House . In 2008 he was professor of poetry at the University of Bamberg .

Von Düffel wrote the stage text for the musical Der Schuh des Manitu (based on the film of the same name by Michael "Bully" Herbig ), which was shown for the first time on December 7, 2008 in the Berlin Theater des Westens . In February 2009 his theater adaptation of Thomas Mann's romantic tale Joseph and his brothers was premiered at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus . On July 31, 2009, his play Das Leben des Siegfried , a comedic version of the Nibelungen saga , premiered at the Nibelungen Festival in Worms , for which he has worked as a dramaturge since 2002. In 2013 von Düffel created the German version of the London hit play Companions ( War Horse ).

Together with the author Stephan Kimmig, von Düffel wrote a fire letter to the Dutch government on June 25, 2011 about cuts under the title Europe would miss crucial theater people , which was signed by numerous cultural workers.
