Christopher Rüping (born September 27, 1985 in Hanover ) is a German theater director .

Life

Christopher Rüping initially assisted at the Schauspielhaus Hannover before he began studying directing at the Hamburg Theater Academy and the Zurich University of the Arts . As part of his studies, he developed his first projects on Kampnagel , which could be seen at festivals in and outside Germany. On his diploma production JEKYLL / HYDE based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde followed their first productions at the Schauspiel Frankfurt in 2011 , including an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald 's novel The Great Gatsby, who was invited to the festival for young directors radikal jung in the Munich Volkstheater in 2012 . In the following years he staged at the Theaterhaus Jena , the State Theater Hanover , the State Theater Stuttgart , the Thalia Theater (Hamburg) and the Deutsches Theater (Berlin) .

In 2014 he created his production Das Fest - Every Family Has a Secret for the Stuttgart State Theater , based on the film of the same name by Thomas Vinterberg , which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . In the same year he was elected young director of the year in the critics' survey of the theater magazine Theater heute .

From 2016 to 2019, Rüping was in-house director at the Münchner Kammerspiele under the directorship of Matthias Lilienthal . This is where his staging of Bertolt Brecht's Drums in the Night , which was also invited to the Theatertreffen, was created here in 2018 , in which Rüping first “re-imagined” the world premiere of the work from 1922 at the Münchner Kammerspiele, then moving the material into the present act by act transpose.

In 2019, Rüping developed the production of Dionysus City at the Münchner Kammerspiele . The ten-hour production was devoted to the subjects of ancient Greece and was formally based on the course of the Dionysian festival in ancient Greece - based on the tragic agon, Rüping initially showed three overrides of ancient subjects that differed in form and content (1st part: Prometheus , 2nd part: Iliad & The Trojans , Part 3: Oresty ). The conclusion of the tetralogy formed a contemporary interpretation of the satyr plays with the use of Jean-Philippe Toussaint La mélancolie de Zidane , in which the author of the legendary head butt Zidane takes in the World Cup final in 2006 to attend a meditation on the cessation. For Dionysus Stadt , Rüping was voted director of the year by both the theater magazines Die Deutsche Bühne and Theater heute . The work could be seen at the Theatertreffen and was awarded the Nestroy Theater Prize in the category “Best performance in German-speaking countries”.

For the 2019/20 season, Rüping moved to the Schauspielhaus Zürich as in-house director . Here, in April / May 2020, during the corona-related theater closings with Dekalog, he developed a ten-part interactive staging for the digital space. The work was invited to the Beijing Fringe Festival and received the Zebra Award for Best International Play . In the same year, his production of Jean-Luc Lagarce's Simply the End of the World premiered, which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2021.

In the 2020/21 season, also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rüping's Zurich production of Jean-Luc Lagarce's Simply the End of the World was recognized in the critics' survey by Theater heute . The two actors Benjamin Lillie and Maja Beckmann were also awarded prizes .

Since his studies, Rüping has worked regularly with the set designer Jonathan Mertz , the costume designer Lene Schwind and the musician Christoph Hart .
