Greed (working title: With gloss and glory ) is a two-part German television film by director Dieter Wedel from 2010. The story is inspired by the life of the fraudster Jürgen Harksen .

action

Part 1: With glitter and glory

Andy Schroth is an employee of a medium-salary real estate company . At a party he meets the impostor Dieter Glanz, who feels sympathy for the young man; Andy Schroth reminds him of his own beginnings. Glanz plays the great investment connoisseur to other wealthy people and thus entices them to invest money with him. Andy Schroth is also so enthusiastic about this venture that he is investing a considerable amount in Glanz. Like other people who have given shine money to invest, he should get it back with interest . Andy Schroth also persuades his father and his colleagues to give him money so that they can invest it profitably with Dieter Glanz.

Andy, along with many others, is eagerly waiting for the promised profits to be distributed. But the windfall has been delayed, instead rumors are surfacing about the lack of seriousness of Glanz.

Part 2: the duel

The seedy Dieter Glanz has since moved to South Africa . The mood among his investors is irritable. Nevertheless, Glanz promises that the profits will soon be distributed.

For Andy Schroth, who went into debt for Dieter Glanz, more and more problems arise. First he loses his job, then his wife Sabine and finally his house. Meanwhile, public prosecutor Sasse begins to investigate the alleged fraudster Glanz. When Andy sees through his machinations at a party at the impostor Glanz, he wants to cooperate with the prosecutor.

After a shootout at Glanz's property in South Africa, he was arrested and extradited to Germany . In one process he can be celebrated as the modern Robin Hood who robbed the rich of their black money to give to the poor, especially to himself. Andy Schroth receives from Nadja Hartmann, the sister of his wife who has since separated from him, who was supposed to ensure the right mood for some investors at extravagant parties, a package with cash that she had buried in the garden and knew of the existence of. In the end, it remains unclear whether this handover has something to do with the one-night stand that Andy Schroth and Nadja Hartmann had together, or out of pity.

criticism

The two-parter received mostly negative reviews.

To the first part

“At the end of the first part, the viewer felt a little betrayed. After all, he had invested 90 minutes of his time, was put off for hours and was still empty-handed at the end of the credits. Dieter Wedel's request to invest the same amount of time again for the second part of Gier seems very questionable. "

To the second part

"Unfortunately, this time only drunk yuppies could be seen in front of a beautiful backdrop, because we looked in vain for tension and depth."

- Moviepilot .de

To the entire film

"The sweeping two-part TV series Gier announced less about fraudulent tricks in the financial sector than about the artistic end of major director Dieter Wedel."

- stern.de

"Entertaining, very timely (television) drama with an excellent cast that addresses boundless greed as well as the almost pathological addiction for recognition."

“With greed , Wedel wants to hold up the mirror to the aging fun society that speculates rich and richer without work. For the two-parter, which short-circuits the critical Hollywood drama of the 1980s with the Degeto touch, the 70-year-old was inspired by the case of financial fraudster Jürgen Harksen. Many “Magic Moments” come to nothing because the story is dramatic for two parts. Too little for a frond. And for the audience too! "
