The production of Norddeutscher Rundfunk is the continuation of the three-part play Once in a Lifetime - Story of a Home from 1972 and is about the perils of a package tour , which the employee Bruno Semmeling doing with his family. In addition to the main actors Antje Hagen and Fritz Lichtenhahn as the Semmeling couple, several other actors from the previous film also appear, although they all play different roles.

overview

Director and screenwriter Dieter Wedel has once again interwoven different storylines and gives deep insights behind the scenes

and finally

  • into the chaotic itinerary of a simple customer.

Using the example of the Semmeling family, Wedel exemplifies the pitfalls of a package holiday - the Semmelings of course experience all conceivable inconveniences at once. As in the previous film, the changing narrative perspectives are also a popular stylistic device by Wedel: tour guides, hoteliers or waiters step out of the plot in the Brechtian theater tradition and convey background to the viewer past Semmeling that the layman naturally does not know and that is therefore left behind.

action

Part 1

Since we had built three years ago - you may remember - my wife and I haven't been away. "

- Bruno

After Bruno Semmeling has recovered a little financially after building his house , he is open to a vacation, stimulated by conversations with colleagues. But first of all, extensive advice in the travel agency and a lengthy prospectus study are required.

“It's not fun to search through the catalogs, no! When you choose a hotel, you decide against a thousand others at the same time, where you don't go. This is real torment. "

- Trude

Ultimately, the Semmelings opt for a package tour to the Grand Hotel in the (fictional) Tyrolean winter sports resort of Oertzl . In order to save on the surcharge for the main season , they want to first drive their own car to Hanover instead of from Hamburg and then start the train journey from there.

The travel agency can't do anything against that. "

- Bruno

Meanwhile, the preparations for the season begin in Oertzl. In the rather shabby Grand Hotel, which has been affected by renovation work, hotelier Bramme and the head of the traffic department Wiesner try to accommodate the room contingents promised to the travel companies with all kinds of tricks.

" You have to put a couple in the staff room." "

- Mr. Bramme

In addition, the Italian waiter Mario calls in to apply. He discovers his old friend and colleague Wastl - called Bimberl by his friends - in front of the house, who immediately recruits him for the Grädik siblings' five-star Sporthotel . Once there, he meets the correct Italian Maître d'hôtel Signor Thommay and his daughters - the service brigade at the Sporthotel is almost complete.

There are four ways of doing one's duty: neat, messy, usual, and mine. With my [r], you drive best. "

- Signor Thommay

Bramme, meanwhile, hopes for snowfall soon, so that the traces of the renovation and renovation work on the Grand Hotel are hidden from the guest's eyes as much as possible.

Finally the season begins and with it the daily work of the staff. Crowds of package tourists move into the Grand Hotel, while the fine sports hotel is mainly booked by individual travelers. There suppresses ( "organized"), the Brigade to the wily Bimberl lots of tricks Dining for their own good, because they do not like the staff meal.

Don't steal anything, what do you think? O RGANISIERE '! "

- Mario

The day of departure for the Semmelings has finally come. Due to numerous imponderables, Bruno was already running late, having arrived at the main train station in Hanover , but initially couldn't find a parking space. When the family finally arrives at the platform, heavily packed, they see their direct travel agency special train disappearing. So they set out on the arduous journey of organizing the journey by train themselves. When they finally arrive in front of the Grand Hotel after an eleven-hour drive, it is already late at night.

It doesn't look particularly inviting…! "

- Trude

Part 2

Quote

The guest always feels at the center of the action. That is the difficulty. "

- Mr Thalhuber, doorman

Since nobody expected Semmeling's arrival at the Grand Hotel, their rooms have now been given to private guests

There can be a bottleneck, right? To have a full house, I MUST overbook at least ten percent during rush hour. […] I'd rather let myself be a little jostling. "

- Mr. Bramme

So the Semmelings have to stay in miserable staff accommodation, which brings Trude to the verge of a nervous breakdown on the first day of her vacation. Bruno insists on adequate accommodation, but is put off by the hotel management with new excuses. At first Bruno cannot find the tour guide Wiesner because he is avoiding him. With Bruno's constant search for Wiesner, the first few days go by without skiing fun .

Bruno keeps discovering new shortcomings in the Grand Hotel. When he complains to Bramme again, hotel guest Abs takes notice of him. Abs, a shrewd package tourist, advises Bruno to document the condition of the hotel as closely as possible in order to collect evidence for the purpose of making additional claims to the tour company.

First commandment: take photos of everything! "

- Mr. Abs

Bruno then gets to work with great enthusiasm, not least to relieve his strained budget. Bramme then releases Bruno from the contract out of concern for peace among his house guests. Bruno immediately goes looking for a new, better room. He finds what he is looking for in the Sporthotel, but initially only for five days - for the time after that, he is offered another room. On this occasion, Bruno makes the acquaintance of Wastl, whom he immediately approaches sloppily.

" Na waiting 'if the coming in again ...! "

- Wastl

part 3

After Bruno has finally met Wiesner's tour guide, the Semmelings can now devote themselves to skiing. Trude is courted by the ski instructor Toni, and Bruno likes to take every opportunity to flirt with the beautiful Fraulein Dassert - but otherwise has his own difficulties.

" Yes, is that possible, how do you stand there? ›Position de toilette‹  - you sit there as if you were sh *** ing! "

- Sepp, Bruno's ski instructor

The room into which the Semmelings were supposed to move after five days is not available due to a mistake by the concierge , Mr. Paul. So you have to move into a temporary facility again, this time into the table tennis room. Wastl, on the other hand, never misses an opportunity to pester Bruno while making Trude's eyes beautiful at the same time.

The weather turns and tears on the nerves of the holiday guests, skiing is once again out of the question for days. The expensive sports hotel and the underestimated ancillary costs tear big holes in the vacation budget of the Semmelings. On top of that, Bruno had his rented skis stolen during one of his numerous visits to the tourist office.

" Trudchen, I have to tell you something. But please don't get upset ... "

- Bruno

The travel company is setting the knife on the chest of the hotelier Grädik: Either he is granting juicy discounts , or they will not take any more contingents from him in the next season. The restaurant brigade continues to suppress guest meals, which Grädik knows, but tolerates for the sake of the business continuity.

Even the day of departure does not go by without a mishap, of course, when Bruno has to look after his suitcase from the departing train, which was left behind while boarding hectically on the platform.

After all, the season in Oertzl is coming to an end, the service staff will be scattered again - until the beginning of next winter.

music

"Giant Slalom" (Klaus Munro)

We're going into the giant slalom straight into happiness,
and if you come with me, you won't regret it.
Buckle up your skis and follow my tracks,
say, what could be nicer, the
two of us are all alone
and ride the giant slalom into happiness.

"Every year again" (Klaus Munro)

The holiday season is the best time,
what could be better?
Whether with family or just as a couple,
it's really worth living here.

Sunshine and powder snow,
a nice hotel and love -
come, get in, leave your worries at home,
buy happiness for yourself.

Klaus Doldinger's film music is particularly cheerful and lively composed and arranged, the lyricist Klaus Munro consciously used strong clichés . This creates a delightfully ironic contrast to the anything but idyllic experiences of the Semmelings.

criticism

"Dieter Wedel's wonderful film can still meet all demands on intelligent entertainment even after twenty years."

- Süddeutsche Zeitung

In "Every Years Again" Wedel revealed what the waiters do when they take off their tails. The hotel guest has no inkling of the sociable alternative world in which one eats the chicken that has been stolen from his plate. Wedel describes doing nothing in such detail that even he shouldn't be able to take it out today. "

- Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"Best TV entertainment."

- Berliner Morgenpost

Others

  • Bimberl's full name is given in the press kit for the film with Wastl Ritsch , but in the film he mentions his family name as Wedel .
  • Dieter Wedel himself has a cameo at the very end of the film, when he sits in front of Günter Strack as a man with a mustache attends a film screening.
