Brigitte Kirsche (born March 31, 1923 in Stettin ; † July 8, 2017 ) was a German film editor . She was best known for her long-term collaboration with film director Eberhard Fechner , for whose documentaries she used new stylistic devices for montage .

Live and act

After an apprenticeship in photography during the war , Brigitte Kirsche first worked at the Afifa copier in Berlin and in the UFA's cutting room . There she got to know the editing of educational films. After the war she worked in synchronized editing at Defa Studios and at Wenzel-Lüdecke . In 1965 she switched to NDR television in Hamburg . She edited small contributions for the regional program as well as documentaries and feature films. As the successor to Luise Dreyer-Sachsenberg , she became chief editor of NDR television. In this capacity, she was particularly committed to the training and further education of prospective film editors. Many an editor and novice director learned the art of film editing from her.

Brigitte Kirsche increasingly worked with well-known editors and directors, such as Joachim Fest (The Architect) , Dieter Wedel (Every year again - the Semmeling family) , (Memorial Day) , and Dieter Meichsner (The big day of Berta Laube) . In 1966 she began working with the director and actor Eberhard Fechner. Among other things, thematically challenging documentaries were made. The best known were the gossip against Klara Heydebreck , The Comedian Harmonists - Six CVs , and The Trial - A Representation of the Majdanek Trial in Düsseldorf . Together with Eberhard Fechner, she developed a new montage style that supported the special narrative style of these films. The style wrote »television history« and is considered by many colleagues as a model: »The dialectical editing means that speed, immediacy and poetry have found their way into the documentary«, says the text accompanying a homage for Kirsche at the Filmplus festival in Cologne, 2003 .

In addition to her work as a film editor, Brigitte Kirsche has worked on several film projects as a dramaturgical consultant and screenwriter. In addition, after her retirement in 1983, she was appointed to be a lecturer in the postgraduate course in film at the University of Hamburg and later also a lecturer at the International Film School in Cologne .

In 2003 Brigitte Kirsche was portrayed by Sara Fruchtmann and Konstanze Radziwill in the 45-minute documentary film Editing - the director and the editor . The film illustrates Kirsche's creative collaboration with Eberhard Fechner. Interviews with the directors Horst Königstein , Heinrich Breloer and Dieter Wedel in this article show how much their assembly art has set a standard.

Kirsche was an honorary member of the Bundesverband Filmschnitt Editor eV (BFS) .
