action

The southern entrance and lock of the Kiel Canal are four hours by boat from the lightship Elbe 1 . There, in Brunsbüttelkoog , there is a seaman's women's home, which is managed by Klara Andresen. That's the main location of the film. In the seaman's women's home, the wives of seamen wait for their return. Klara Andresen not only takes care of the worries of the waiting sailors' wives, but also of her brother-in-law Gustav Andresen. Gustav went to sea as a ship's cook for years and now wants to get married. That's why he wants to put up a marriage announcement. Klara is amazed at the change in attitude of her brother-in-law, who was always convinced that he would be happy alone.

He met Lore Elgers in a clothing store. She has been friends with Horst Lohmeyer for some time and unexpectedly receives a marriage proposal from him. At the same time he offers her that he has hired a ship and that he will go to South America for half a year. She wants to say goodbye to him properly and rents a night in the seaman's women's home so that she doesn't miss the ship's departure. The farewell is not going as Lore expected. After Horst had achieved his goal and had spent the night with her, he canceled the engagement without further ado. Lore returns to the seaman's home dejected to pick up her things. There she meets Gustav Andresen, who, together with his sister-in-law, tries desperately to give up a reasonable text for his marriage announcement. Klara comforts the completely dissolved ex-seaman's bride, who now has to see that her Horst had lied to her by the line and thread. She doesn't want to go back home so disappointed, but stays in the seaman's home for a while and takes on a job as a domestic help with Klara.

Gustav now receives the first reactions to his marriage announcement, but there is no candidate who suits him. He's beginning to have doubts as to whether it was such a good idea to get married. But then he meets Elli Mewes, whom he already knows from the confirmation hour. He shyly draws her attention to his plan to marry and obviously he does not seem averse to choosing Elli for it. It comes to Elli a little suddenly and doesn't quite know what to say. Secretly, however, she was pleased and quickly comes to an agreement with Gustav. Klara is more than surprised and suddenly she doesn't like it anymore. After all, she is also very fond of her brother-in-law and has got used to him over the years.

Gustav, on the other hand, is getting more and more impatient and when his bride doesn't show up for work the next day, he is very worried. Little does he know that Elli is pouring out her heart on his sister-in-law because it's all going too fast for her. But when she notices that Gustav took such care of her, she is sure that they will both be fine.

They get married with their friends and relatives and Gustav prepares the roast for the wedding himself. He didn't want to let that be taken from him. After the wedding, Gustav goes back to sea and confides his wife, who has stayed behind, to his sister-in-law.

Others
