Gil Mehmert
Gil Mehmert (born February 19, 1965 in Werne ( North Rhine-Westphalia )) is a German theater and film director and university professor.
Life
Mehmert first studied music in Cologne and completed directing training at the University of Music and Theater in Munich with August Everding . He has directed at numerous renowned theaters in Germany, including in Berlin, Bochum, Landshut, Hamburg and Munich as well as in Zurich and Vienna. He also worked as a director and teacher at the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding . Since 2003 he has been teaching at the Folkwang University in Essen .
In addition to musicals, stage adaptations of film material characterize his work, but also lavish open-air productions such as the opening show and the finale of RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture , which were broadcast live by ZDF and WDR.
He directed and wrote the screenplay for the 2004 film From the Depth of Space . His film Ukelele Blues (1999) was shown at the Nordic Film Days in Lübeck in 2000 .
In 2014 he turned Sönke Wortmann's film version of The Miracle of Bern into a musical . The musical is based on the 1954 FIFA World Cup and was on 23 November 2014 Theater on the Elbe in Hamburg premiered .
In October 2014, Gil Mehmert Lloyd Webbers directed the musical Jesus Christ Superstar at Theater Dortmund with Alexander Klaws in the leading role. The premiere was so successful that all 17 performances and the four additional performances were sold out within three days and the production was awarded the "Opernfreund-Stern".
In the musical elections of the online musical magazine Musical 1 , the Dortmund production of Jesus Christ Superstar was awarded as the best musical (Short Run) in 2014 and 2015. Broadwayworld , one of the world's largest websites about musicals, voted Gil Mehmert second in 2014 in the category “Best Director”. Also in 2015, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR / Dortmund was voted first in the musical elections in the “Short Run” category.
In 2015 he directed the Musical Cabaret at the 65th Bad Hersfeld Festival . In the 2016/17 season he staged Evita at the Bonn Theater.
