Frank lives with his parents, Frank Abagnale Sr. and Paula Abagnale in a house in New Rochelle , New York . His parents met in France during the Second World War . Paula danced during a show, Frank Sr. noticed among the soldiers and the two married a short time later (the pinstripe is what matters) . Due to financial difficulties, Frank's parents can no longer afford private school and send him to a public school. Frank wears the jacket of his school uniform here too, since he is so used to it, and the students promptly mistake him for an exchange teacher. This gives him an idea and a few days later Frank Sr. and Paula are summoned by the principal of the school, who explains to them that Frank teaches the class, gives homework, and is invited to a parents' evening while the actual French teacher is away Planned a trip to a french fry factory.

One day Frank found his mother at home dancing with a friend of his father's. Paula asks Frank; not to tell his father about it and slips him a little money. However, Frank soon finds himself in the courtroom, where his parents are fighting over custody of him. Frank is supposed to decide, but instead decides to run away (Another skin) . He then quickly learns how to forge checks , distribute them to banks across the country and make millions of dollars that quickly .

When he passes a New York hotel, Frank meets some attractive stewardesses and decides to become a pilot. After forging a pilot's ID , he finds a job as a copilot with Pan American Airways (Jet Set) . Meanwhile, Hanratty finds countless counterfeit checks in his Washington, DC office. He and his agents Brandon, Cod and Dollar try hard to find the forger (break no law) .

Frank enjoys his job as a pilot and remembers what his father always said to him: "Women love men in uniform", that is, "The uniform is what matters". Because of homesickness, he decides to visit his father, Frank Sr. Frank finds out that his father had to close the shop to save money. Frank tries to help his father by offering to pay him everything. Frank Sr. refuses this, however, as he believes that his son should enjoy his own success rather than worry about it (butter from milk) . Meanwhile, Hanratty rummages through the remains in one of Frank's hotel rooms (The man in there in the trash) . So he finds out that Frank is in Los Angeles and follows him to his hotel room there. However, Frank manages to fool him and escape by pretending to be a Secret Service agent named Clark Kent .

At Christmas, Frank celebrates a Christmas party with a few Pan American Airways crew members, but feels lonely and calls Hanratty to talk to someone. Hanratty only realizes during this phone call that the trickster he is looking for is still a child and Frank has no one to spend Christmas with (Christmas is one of the favorite times) .

2nd act

Frank is at a party again, this time at the hospital staff. When one of the doctors asks him about his job, Frank lies and says he is a pediatrician at Death Valley Children's Hospital and calls himself “Dr. Connors ". Out of pity, Frank gets a job as a senior physician in the emergency room at Atlanta General Hospital (what the doctor ordered) .

Meanwhile, Hanratty is still looking for Frank, scouring all of the missing ads for young teenagers (live and all in color (Reprise II)) . So he comes across Frank's mother Paula and her new husband. Hanratty asks Paula about Frank's whereabouts, but only receives the information that he should contact Frank Sr. (Let me hear from you) . While he then interrogates Frank's father, both men realize that they both had bad fathers and Hanratty tries to get Frank Sr. to lead his son back on the right path (little boy, be a man) .

Meanwhile, Frank fell in love with one of the nurses, Brenda Strong. He tells her that he has already seen all of the “Seven Wonders” in the world, but nothing can be compared to her (Seven Wonders) . Frank persuades Brenda to go home again because she (like him) ran away from home too. He wants to become engaged to her. Over dinner with Brenda's parents, Frank lies again and claims that he is a lawyer, doctor and Lutheran in order to impress Brenda's father. At first he doesn't believe him, but then allows the engagement after Frank has protested how much he loves Brenda. Now it comes to family home evening together in front of the TV after Frank made a proposal to Brenda, which she accepted. (Family clan) .

During the engagement party, Frank learns that Hanratty has tracked him down. He confesses the truth to Brenda and gives her his real name: Frank William Abagnale Jr. He makes her promise that she should follow him. They want to meet at the airport the next morning and then escape together and become happy. For this he leaves her a whole suitcase full of money with which she is supposed to pay for a taxi. Frank flees just before Hanratty enters the room and asks Brenda about her fiancé. Brenda, however, refuses to answer and only swears on her love for Frank and that she would never betray him (fly, fly to happiness) .

As at the beginning of the play, Frank is arrested at the airport. While the agents escort the passengers out of the hall, Frank pretends to Hanratty that he wants to flee. Hanratty, however, sees it calmly and tells him that he does not assume that he will flee, since Frank is after all tired of running away from everything. Hanratty then informs Frank that his father died when he was drunk and fell down a staircase in Grand Central Station and broke his neck. When Frank realizes that he has no one left, since the police were only able to bring him to the airport after Brenda's pursuit, he surrenders to Hanratty (goodbye) . Frank is sentenced to fifteen years in prison, but released after seven years. From now on he works for the FBI to stop check fraudsters. In the end, Hanratty and Frank admit to each other that their partnership is somehow strange, but warm-hearted and open, and Frank keeps another promise by revealing to Hanratty that he really learned for the bar exam in New Orleans and did not cheat (Strange but true) .
