The film is set in 1965. The main character is the car painter Hans-Günter, a shy man in his mid-twenties who is bullied by his boss and lives in the middle class milieu of some small town on the Lower Rhine .
Hans-Günter has mastered the Tipp-Kick game almost to perfection. At a tournament in which he could qualify for the West German Tipp-Kick championship, he met the pretty newspaper photographer Marion. The two fall in love. At a rendezvous, Hans-Günter's lovingly designed Tipp-Kick figure - white with the number 10 - is transformed into a lively person through an unhappy bath in Marion's photo chemicals, who gradually takes on the shape and role of the soccer player Günter Netzer . The associated complications let Hans-Günter neglect his relationship with Marion.
In a framework that takes place in the present from 2004, the now aged Hans-Günter tells his fantastic story to a nurse in a nursing home and dies afterwards. As a punchline , an old lady (Marion) then begins to get excited about comments at international soccer matches (in which Netzer had his regular place in the 2000s).

The eponymous phrase, which is famous not only in the football discourse, was coined by the then London correspondent for the FAZ, Karl-Heinz Bohrer , who reported on the occasion of the Wembley-Elf game (1972) that Netzer had presented his advances "from the depths of space".
Günter Netzer published his autobiography under the same title in 2004 .
