Ober-Olm is located in Rheinhessen , just under 7 kilometers south-southwest of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz . North of the municipality is the Ober-Olmer Forest , which was placed under nature protection in 2017 together with the adjacent areas (" Wiesen am Layenhof - Ober-Olmer Wald ").

The residential areas Am Wald, Erlenhof, Staarbergerhof and Wiesenmühle also belong to Ober-Olm .

The annual precipitation is 620 mm. The rainfall is low. They are in the lower quarter of the values recorded in Germany. Lower values are registered at 25% of the measuring stations of the German Weather Service . The driest month is February, with the highest rainfall in May. In May there is 1.7 times more rainfall than in February. Precipitation hardly varies and is evenly distributed over the year. Lower seasonal fluctuations are recorded at only 23% of the measuring stations .

history

Finds in the district from the 4th millennium BC Chr. Represent the first evidence of settlement. In the year 97 Consul Veiento had a temple built for the goddess Nemetona in his Klein-Winternheimer estate, a richly furnished Roman settlement, in the Upper Olmer corridor "villa cellar" . The place Ober-Olm itself was founded in the 6th century as a Franconian foundation and was first mentioned in a document in 994. The name "Ulmena Superior" from 1190 was previously associated with elms , but the tree names were only adopted from Latin into German in the 12th century. The formation of the place name “Ulm” and an ending “ena” is typical for a brook name, and these are very often used as settlement names. It can be assumed that "Ulmena" was the name that the Germanic settlers between Ober-Olm and Nieder-Olm gave the Selz. The remaining Roman population still used the name "Salusia" for the stream, which eventually caught on. However, “Ulmena” stuck to the two “Olm” as a place name, “Ulmena Superior” for Ober-Olm.

In the years 1582, 1603 and 1857 the place was destroyed by devastating fires.

Ober-Olm has been part of the Nieder-Olm community since 1972 .

A mighty elm from around 1745 that characterizes the site fell victim to the dying of the elm in 1985 and had to be removed down to the trunk. In 2009 the trunk also had to be felled. In its place was an art object made of Corten steel , which shows the outline of a tree disc.

The federal highway 63 is reached after about three kilometers.

Deutsche Bahn's Klein Winternheim-Ober-Olm station is located in neighboring Klein-Winternheim (see Alzey – Mainz line ).

City bus connection to Mainz (line 54 to the city center and line 55 to Nieder-Olm or also to the city center of Mainz) and bus connections of the ORN (regional line 650) to the Rhine-Hessian area and in the evening to the city of Mainz and back until after midnight.
