history
After a well-developed Roman road to Gaul, along with Roman villas, existed early on , it was not until the 10th century that major clearings were made to create settlements. Archbishop Willigis (approx. 940-1011), builder of the cathedral and St. Stephen's Church in Mainz, had a chapel built in Marienborn , which became a destination for pilgrims from 1317 . The image of grace of the "comforter of the afflicted" dates from around 1420/30. Marienborn's early traditional names are Brunnon , Burne and Born ( mhd. "Source"). In the middle of the 17th century the name Mariäborn is mentioned for the first time , in 1685 Marienborn .
From 1729 the village church was built with a baroque interior and consecrated on August 31, 1760 by Auxiliary Bishop Christoph Nebel .
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Marienborn was part of the fortress wall around Mainz . Thanks to its location at the foot of the Rhine-Hessian plateau , the place was ideally suited as a military headquarters ; so also in 1793 with the siege and recapture of the French-occupied Mainz by a Prussian army. Duke Karl August von Weimar , whose troops were also at Marienborn at the time, had brought his Minister of State Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with him, who watched the fighting for the city from May 27th to June 26th. Around thirty years later, he wrote down his experiences in a diary style during the "Siege of Mainz". The young Heinrich von Kleist and the Prussian general and war theorist Carl von Clausewitz also stayed in Marienborn that year.
On June 7, 1969, Marienborn was incorporated into the state capital Mainz with five other suburbs .

Economy and Infrastructure
Marienborn is in close proximity to the ZDF on the neighboring Lerchenberg and to the research center of the technology group Schott . Popack Logistik has been operating a logistics hall since 2004 with today (2017) 20,000 pallet spaces directly at Marienborn train station. The media company VRM (formerly Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main) is located in the Marienborner district. In the village itself, but also in the surrounding area - such as the Marienborner Bergweg and around the Chausseehaus - influences of agricultural use dominate. The region has a good reputation for high quality fruit , especially apples , plums, pears and cherries. Regional specialties include cherry wine and freshly squeezed apple juice.
traffic
With the expansion of the Hessian Ludwig Railway from Mainz to Alzey in 1871, Marienborn received a railway connection and train station . The trains on the RB 31 line today (as of 2017) run every hour to Mainz Hauptbahnhof or Alzey . Between May and November, the Elsass-Express stops twice a day on Sundays and public holidays between Mainz Hauptbahnhof and Wissembourg .
Marienborn lies at the intersection of the A 60 ( Mainzer Autobahnring ) and A 63 (Mainz – Kaiserslautern ) motorways .
Both Mainz city center and the surrounding districts are easily accessible with the MVG bus and tram lines (for details on the lines, see the infobox). With the timetable change on December 11, 2016, a new tram route was inaugurated from the main train station in the direction of Lerchenberg, the so-called " Mainzelbahn ". The new route is used by lines 51 (coming from Finthen) and 53 (coming from Hechtsheim) and connects Marienborn with both the main station and the university .
