The Mainz-Süd motorway junction (short: Mainz-Süd junction , sometimes just: Mainzer Kreuz ) connects the federal motorway 60 (connection number 21) with the A 63 (connection number 2) and the federal highway 40 southwest of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz . The Mainzer Kreuz lies between the two districts of Marienborn and Bretzenheim . The motorway bridge structure was built in 1965 and is 24 meters wide and 67 meters long.

The directional lanes of the A 60 and A 63 each have two lanes, all connecting ramps are single lane. To the east of the cross, the A 60 has six lanes.

The transition from the A 60 from Frankfurt to the A 63 in the direction of Kaiserslautern was built in a short, tight loop. Due to this short and narrow loop, the speed is limited here to 40 km / h in order to avoid especially truck accidents.

Coming from the direction of Kaiserslautern, the A 63 changes to the B 40 after the motorway junction; since February 1, 2013, a green particulate matter sticker has been required to continue into the city center of Mainz.

For heavy goods traffic, there is a sign in front of the Mainzer Kreuz from Bingen that the federal road 9 to Worms is closed to heavy goods traffic . Therefore the A 63 and then A 61 , via Alzeyer Kreuz , must be used.

Road rehabilitation began on June 28, 2014. During the entire construction period, which lasted until September 2014, the transport connections from Kaiserslautern to Bingen am Rhein and from downtown Mainz to Darmstadt were completely closed. The other directions were reduced to a track, especially on weekends. Despite this renovation, the A 60 bridge over the A 63 is to be renewed from late spring 2017 within three years with ongoing traffic.

As part of the six-lane expansion of the A 60 in the intersection and on to the Mainz triangle, the loop ramp from the A 60 from Frankfurt to the A 63 towards Kaiserslautern is to be replaced by a semi-direct ramp. The two bridge structures, for each lane of the A 60, will be renewed between July 2017 and probably summer 2021 with ongoing traffic over a width of 32 meters and a length of 95.5 meters.
