Friedrich Schütz (historian)

Friedrich Schütz (born September 21, 1936 in Niederschelden , Siegerland ; † April 5, 2007 in Großrosseln ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1997 to 2002 he was head of the Mainz City Archives . The focus of his scientific work was the recent history of the city of Mainz .

Life

Friedrich Schütz attended elementary school in his hometown and then completed vocational training . He then worked as a materials tester in various craft and technical areas. In 1966 he and his wife moved to Mainz, where he attended the Ketteler College as part of his second education , where he also graduated from high school in 1970 .

From 1970 to 1974 he studied history and German at the University of Mainz . During his studies, Schütz received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . In 1974 he passed the first state examination and in 1976 the second state examination. In parallel to his final years of study, he was an archive trainee at the State Archives in Koblenz and at the Archive School in Marburg from 1974 to 1976 . In 1976, Schütz took up a position at the Mainz City Archives. In 1977 he became archivist, 1980 senior archivist and 1990 archivist. In 1993 he took over the management of the city archive from his predecessor Ludwig Falck ; In 1997 he was appointed chief archive director. In 2002 Friedrich Schütz retired and was succeeded by Wolfgang Dobras . Since 1961 he was married to his wife Rosemarie. In 2007 Friedrich Schütz died after a long illness. He is buried in the main cemetery in Mainz .

Scientific activity

In line with his work in the Mainz City Archives, Schütz researched and published primarily on the history of the city of Mainz and the surrounding towns. The focus of his work was, among other things, the history of the Jews in Mainz and Hesse . As an organizer of urban history exhibitions, he was among others for exhibitions such as "Jews in Mainz" (1978), " German Jacobins - Mainz Republic and Cisrhenans 1792–1798" (1982), "Seizure of power in Mainz" (1983) and "Das Mainz Rad an der Gera ”(1992). Catalogs edited by Friedrich Schütz were published for all the exhibitions he organized.

Schütz was also a member of the board of the Mainz antiquity association and editor of the “ Mainzer Zeitschrift ” published by it and a regular author on the history of the city in the magazine “Mainz. Quarterly magazines for culture, politics, economics and history ”. He was a member of the Hessian Historical Commission Darmstadt , the Historical Commission for Nassau and the Commission for the History of the Jews in Hesse . In 2006 he received the Roman Imperial Medallion of the City of Mainz .

Engagement in the Mainz Carnival

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary, Friedrich Schütz joined the Mainz Ranzengarde in 1987 , to whose corps of honorary officers he belonged, most recently with the rank of colonel. He was one of the authors of the guard area of ​​the Mainz Ranzengarde and organized an exhibition in the Mainz town hall for its 165th anniversary . When the Mainz Carnival Museum was founded in 2004, Friedrich Schütz took over the honorary management of the museum located in the Mainz Proviant-Magazin .
