Ludwig Falck (born February 5, 1928 in Mainz ) is a German historian and archivist . From 1972 until his retirement in 1993 he was director of the Mainz City Archives . The focus of his research is medieval Mainz .

Life and professional history

Ludwig Falck was the son of Richard Falck, a high administrative official in Rheinhessen , and Franziska, nee Metternich. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Mathias Metternich and Germain Metternich . He attended the Adam-Karillon-Gymnasium (today Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium ) in Mainz, where he passed the Abitur in 1946. In the same year he began his studies in the subjects of classical philology and history at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, which had just reopened . In 1948 he moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and later to thePhilipps University in Marburg . Here he did his doctorate in 1952 under Heinrich Büttner, who was also born in Mainz, on the subject of the monastic policy of the Archbishops of Mainz in the 12th century .

The successful provisional completion of his academic work was followed by a teaching traineeship , including at the International German School in Saint-Cloud near Paris , up to the second state examination .

Falck continued his teacher training, this time at the Marburg archive school . After completing his studies, he took up a position as an archive assessor at the city archive in Mainz. As part of his professional career, he was later appointed archivist and senior councilor. As chief archive director, he then headed the Mainz city archive until his retirement in 1993.

Scientific work

Falck began working on a project as early as 1959, the aim of which was to collect all the sources on the history of the Middle Ages in Mainz in external archives in a collection of copies. The inventory collected in this way now includes over 40,000 documents. Results from the scientific processing of this fund can be found, among other things, in Falck's 2007 first volume of the "Mainzer Regesten zur Geschichte der Stadt", which provides detailed information on the contents of 1303 documents from the period 1200 to 1250.

Memberships and other activities

Falck is a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse , the Society for Rhenish History and was active on the board of the Mainz Antiquities Association for over twenty years . Falck was also involved in setting up the carnival archive.

Falck is a violinist and worked as an honorary concertmaster for a long time. He also played in the orchestra of the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz .
