The FIDAE ( Spanish : Feria Internacional del Aire y del Espacio , English : International Air & Space Fair ; German : International Exhibition on Aerospace) is an international, in Santiago de Chile biennially held air show with a military background. The fair takes place every two years. In 1990 the name was changed to the current name.

history

The first event, then under the name FIDA'80 ( Feria Internacional del Aire ), took place from March 21st to 30th, 1980 and the period was intended to commemorate the event when hangars were occupied by Chilean military 50 years ago during a crisis. As part of this international event, the El Bosque air force base of the Chilean Air Force was put into operation. The occasion for the fair was the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Chilean air force .

The concern of FIDA'80 was that the host, the Chilean air force, issue an invitation to similar and friendly institutions ( cooperation of South American junta states) as well as to representatives of the aviation and defense industry. 32 partners from 13 countries with 113 stands participated in the first exhibition. The number of visitors was put at 115,000. Were shown u. a. the Cessna A-37 B and Cessna T-37 , Hawker Hunter and the Northrop F-5E Tiger I , a demilitarized version of the C-130H Hercules of the Spanish Air Force and the CASA C-101 training aircraft . Among the South American countries involved were Argentina with an IA-58 Pucara , and Brazil with an EMB 121 Xingu and EMB-110 Bandeirante . The focus was on developments in military aircraft construction. The exhibition also presented exhibits from gliding , model making and radio remote control technology .

At FIDA'84, South Africa showed the Kukri V3 missile-based air defense system (air-to-air missile) through its arms company Armscor , which could be operated by a pilot with target control in his helmet. This presentation was one of the biggest attractions at this air show. In addition, South Africa came up with a new development in radio technology, according to which the transmission frequency is changed during signal transmission ( frequency hopping ). Piet G. Marais, then Chairman of Armscor, presented both exhibits as special results of the international embargo against his country, which would have released strong motivating forces. He also estimated that South Africa is now one of the top 5 countries in the world for the production of military equipment. When it comes to ammunition production, Marais believed his country was third in the world after the USA and the Soviet Union and particularly emphasized the variety and breadth of innovation under the direction of Armscor. From March 3 to 10, 1984, 174 exhibitors with 254 stands from 19 countries were represented. 200,000 visitors were counted in the course of the event.

Due to the growing success of the event, the fair moved in 1990 and took up residence at Los Cerrillos Airport . An expansion was necessary in 2006 and the current location is now at Aeropuerto Arturo Merino Benitez , the international airport of Santiago.
