The Fuerza Aérea de Chile (FACh) are the air forces of the Republic of Chile and the third of four branches of the Chilean armed forces . It is led by General Osvaldo Sarabia Vilches and, with 10,600 soldiers, is not the largest in terms of personnel, but it is one of the best-equipped air forces in Latin America . This results in particular from the Copper Act of 1958 ( Ley del Cobre Reservado ), according to which 10% of copper export revenues are exclusively due to the military.
history
The forerunner of the FACh, Servicio de Aviación Militar de Chile , was founded in 1910. Important tasks were initially of a non-military nature, such as exploring the Andes , long-haul flights or airmail transport. The roots of today's LAN Chile also lie in this postal service . The air force, independent of the army and navy, was finally founded on March 21, 1930 under the name Fuerza Aérea Nacional (FAN). Its first commander in chief was Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez , after which the international airport of Santiago de Chile is named today.
The first military operation came on September 7, 1931, during a mutiny by seamen in Coquimbo . The FACh was used for the second time in the 1973 military coup , with Hawker Hunter launched in Talcahuano bombing the La Moneda presidential palace , the house of socialist President Salvador Allende and radio stations.
FIDAE has been held in Santiago every two years since 1980 , an international aerospace trade fair that was initiated by the Chilean Air Force.
equipment
The Luftwaffe has had 28 F-16 fighter jets delivered from the USA and the Netherlands since 2007 (6 F-16C Bl50M, 4 F-16D Bl50M, 11 F-16A MLU Bl20 and 7 F-16B MLU Bl20). In May 2009 the Chilean government bought another 18 F-16 fighter planes in the Netherlands. After 2010 Chile will have a fleet of 46 F-16 fighter aircraft. In addition, some heavily modernized F-5 Tiger III Plus fighter planes are flown, as well as 18 Mirage-Mirsip (were called "Elkan") and 15 Mirage-Pantera until recently. They are deployed at the Los Condores and Cerro Moreno air bases and in Chabunco (Patagonia).
With ENAER Empresa Nacional de Aeronáutica , Chile began developing its own aviation industry in 1984. At the moment mainly training aircraft of the type T-35 "Pillán" and ENAER Eaglet are produced, in addition modified versions of the Mirage 50 , called ENAER Pantera, are being built. ENAER works closely with the Spanish CASA , now Airbus Military , and offers services for aircraft maintenance and aircraft parts construction. The Chilean Air Force uses a number of ENAER and CASA aircraft types. Three Airbus A400M transport aircraft that had been ordered were canceled, as well as two A310 MRTT aircraft with "flying boom". Instead of the latter, 3 KC-135E were overhauled, modernized and the last machine was delivered in March 2012.
