The Gulfstream IV from the American manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace is a large twin-engine long-haul business jet that was sold over five hundred times from 1985 to 2002.
history
The Gulfstream IV is the successor to the Gulfstream III . The new model has a greater range with an increased payload and lower fuel consumption. Development began in early 1983, the first flight took place on September 19, 1985 from Savannah / Hilton Head Airport with Lee Johnson and Ted Mendenhall as test pilots. In September 1992 the original version was replaced by the completely revised Gulfstream IV-SP , which increased the payload and range again.
The successor was the Gulfstream V , which was delivered from 1997.
The planned cargo version was given the designation SRA-4 and is intended primarily for military purposes (electronic warfare, reconnaissance); the prototype had its maiden flight in 1988. The US Army put some Gulfstream IVs into service as C-20F , the US Navy five machines as C-20G for up to 26 passengers and a cargo door on the right-hand side, and the US Air Force a version of the GIV-SP as C-20H . Another version of the GIV-SP is the S 102B corps of the Swedish Air Force for electronic reconnaissance. An EC-20F demonstrator for the US Navy flew in August 1988 but was not mass-produced. The U-4 is a multi-purpose version for the Japanese Air Force.
construction
Compared to the previous model, the Gulfstream IV has a slightly longer hull. It was the quieter and more fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Tay - turbofan equipped -Triebwerken and received newly constructed wing . The cockpit is equipped with EFIS screens.
use
The Gulfstream IV is mainly used as a business jet. It is also used as a weather observation aircraft by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA and as a medical aircraft.
A number of records were flown with the Gulfstream IV-SP, for example circumnavigations of the world.
