The Boeing C-40 Clipper is a military version of the Boeing 737-700C . It is used by both the US Air Force and the US Navy . The C-40 initially had the military type designation C-39. For unknown reasons, this was changed to C-40 before it was commissioned.

history

C-40A

The US Navy mainly uses the C-40A Clipper as a transport and passenger aircraft. The United States Navy Reserve (until 2005: United States Naval Reserve), which operates all aircraft, was the first customer for the new Boeing 737-700C and ordered five C-40A as part of the Navy Unique Fleet Essential Airlift Replacement Aircraft Program. The aircraft has a flight management computer system with integrated GPS . It also has a head-up display .

The Navy ordered this type to replace the outdated C-9B Skytrain II . The aircraft is the US Navy's first cargo aircraft in 17 years. The Clipper can either be flown as a passenger, cargo or combi aircraft.

The Navy initially ordered 9 aircraft. The first two were shipped on April 21, 2001, and two more the following year. The 5th and 6th aircraft were delivered in August 2002, the 7th on November 22nd, 2004. The eighth aircraft joined the fleet in February 2005 and the ninth aircraft on May 26, 2006. The order was later increased to 17. The last copy was delivered in 2019.

She is in service with three squadrons, the VR-58 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., The VR-59 at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth (JRB) Forth Worth, Texas, and the VR-51 of Marine Corps Base Hawaii .

C-40B and C-40C

A C-40B

The US Air Force chose the BBJ version of the Boeing 737-700 as the starting type for the C-40B . The type replaced the C-137 Stratoliner in the Air Force .

The C-40B is an "office in heaven" and is used by high-ranking military and politicians. On the plane there is everything that there is in a “normal” office of a politician, from encrypted data lines via the Internet, television and telephone to copiers, fax machines and computers. The C-40B also has a computerized passenger data system.

The first C-40Cs were delivered to the Air Force in October 2002, with the next two following in December. These planes are stationed at Andrews Air Force Base . Additional C-40Cs are stationed in Hawaii at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and at Scott Air Force Base . The aircraft replaced the Boeing C-22 in the US Air Force .
