The Gulfstream I is a twin-engine turboprop - business aircraft manufacturer's Grumman . The internal type number was G-159 .
history
In 1956, Grumman began developing a twin-engine turboprop business jet. The aircraft should be able to carry 10 to 14 people. Alternatively, up to 24 passengers could be carried. The Gulfstream I was designed as a conventional low-wing aircraft with a pressurized cabin and retractable nose wheel landing gear . Two Rolls-Royce Dart propeller turbines were used as the drive .
The first prototype flew on August 14, 1958, delivery began in June 1959. In 1969, production was discontinued in favor of the Gulfstream II .
Versions
- Gulfstream I: Standard version, of which a total of 200 machines were built.
- Gulfstream IC: Conversions of older Gulfstream I. These aircraft were given a 3.25 m longer fuselage in order to be able to transport a total of 38 passengers. Five copies were made between 1979 and 1980.
- TC-4C Academe: Version for the US Navy and US Marine Corps for the training of navigators / bombardiers for the A-6 Intruder . This version can be recognized by its pear-shaped nose radome . Nine aircraft were built from this version.
- VC-4C: VIP transport aircraft for the US Coast Guard . Two copies were delivered.
Military users
- United States Army - The United States Army Corps of Engineers had a Gulfstream I with a civilian color scheme and civil registration number in use from 1961 to 1981. The US Army had at least one Gulfstream I in use, which had been confiscated from drug dealers.

Incidents
- An African Commuter Services Grumman G-159 Gulfstream I ( aircraft registration number 5Y-EMJ ) chartered by the Kenyan government failed to gain altitude after taking off from Busia Airport , Kenya , and collided with obstacles. Three people were killed, including the Kenyan Minister of Labor. The investigations revealed major irregularities in the operation of the machine with regard to pilots, maintenance and previous damage (see also flight accident of a Grumman Gulfstream I in Busia ) .
