The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is a long-range strategic bomber under development for the US Air Force . Designed as a stealth aircraft , the B-21 is to replace the Rockwell B-1 and Northrop B-2 from the mid-2020s , with a total strength of 100 machines planned. By February 2016, the B-21 was under the project name LRS-B ( L ong R is S trike B omber ) known.

Development history

The US Department of Defense announced on October 27, 2015 that Northrop Grumman had received the contract. A single plane is not more than 550 million while US dollars cost. The bomber is manufactured by Northrop Grumman with his B-2 experience. The order volume is estimated at 80 billion US dollars (2015), a quarter of it for research and development.

Commissioning is planned for 2025, with a total of 100 bombers to be purchased (as of 2015). To test the prototypes, preparations began in spring 2018 at Edwards Air Force Base in California for setting up a test flight squadron.

Ellsworth Air Force Base is planned as the first operational base .
