Lists on the subject

The North American AGM-28 Hound Dog (former designation: GAM-77 ) was an air-to-surface guided missile and from 1957 the first cruise missile of the US Air Force to carry a nuclear weapon . The name Hound Dog comes from Elvis Presley's version of the song Hound Dog . It was developed with the then new B-52 to prevent the bomber from flying over strongly defended targets. The missile had delta wings and canards as control surfaces. As engine a served Turbojet type Pratt & Whitney J52 with 33 kN thrust. About 700 missiles were made.

Development began in 1957 under the project name Weapon System 131B (in German: Waffensystem 131B ) after North American had successfully won the tender. The prototype flew under its own power for the first time in April 1959, and operational readiness was established in December 1959. The B-52 could carry two of these missiles.

The missiles used an inertial navigation system and were able to fly a programmed path of up to 1,100 km. In the variant GAM-77A, the control was improved and a radar altimeter was used, which enabled navigation via ground tracking ( TERCOM ). This was reported ready for use from September 1961. In June 1963, the missiles were officially designated AGM-28A and AGM-28B.

Originally, the AGM-28 was supposed to be replaced by the AGM-48 Skybolt in 1965 , which however was not fully developed. Finally it was replaced from 1972 by the AGM-69 SRAM . The last AGM-28 were withdrawn by the emergency services in 1976.
