AGM-64 Hornet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AGM-64 Hornet was an American air-to-surface missile that did not get beyond the status of a test vehicle.

In 1960, under the supervision of the US Air Force, a project called ATGAR ( A nti- T ank- G uided- A ircraft- R ocket) took place. In the end, the project did not materialize, but the results obtained were so impressive that the Air Force commissioned North American to develop an air-to-surface missile called the AGM-64 Hornet. The Hornet was equipped with a TV seeker head and a solid rocket propulsion system. In 1964 the first tests took place under the designation XAGM-64A. It was decided, however, that the project would go in favor of the better-regarded AGM-65 Maverick is set.

Then, in 1968, before the project finally ended, the Hornet was used as a test platform for various target systems. Among other things, a laser aiming system that was later used on the AGM-114 Hellfire was tested on it.
