The AGM-76 Falcon developed by Hughes is a further development of the AIM-47 Falcon . In contrast to this, the AGM-76 should not serve as an air-to-air missile , but as an air-to-surface missile .

Much data about the AGM-76 program is still unknown, so much is speculative. It seems certain, however, that the Falcon was a long-range air-to-ground missile that was equipped with the seeker head of the AGM-45 Shrike and a warhead weighing around 113 kg. The Lockheed YF-12 and North American F-108 were intended as carrier aircraft .

The AGM-76 can be classified in the era of the Vietnam War . Depending on the source, the 1960s can be regarded as the development period.
