The AIM-95 prototype

The AIM-95 Agile , developed by Hughes in 1968, was a short-range air-to-air missile designed to replace the AIM-9 Sidewinder . The program was originally initiated by the US Navy . The US Air Force was later added because its AIM-82 program had to be terminated.

The rocket had an infrared seeker head and a solid rocket motor. A few copies were built that were used for flight tests. In 1975 the program was discontinued because it became too expensive. Instead it was decided to improve the AIM-9 further.
