Lists on the subject

In the AGM-158 JASSM ( J oint A ir-to- S urface S tandoff M issile ) is an air-to-ground missiles medium to high range. It is used by the US Corporation Lockheed Martin produced.

development

The development of the JASSM began in 1995 immediately after the AGM-137-TSSAM program was canceled due to excessive costs. The development goal was now a far-reaching, inexpensive and precision-guided LO missile that should cost considerably less than the AGM-137 TSSAM. In June 1996, development and risk reduction contracts were awarded to McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed Martin. The competing guided missile designs were designated AGM-158A and AGM-159A , with Lockheed Martin winning the tender in April 1998. The first flight tests took place in November 1999 and development tests began in January 2001. Pre-series production began in December of the same year, and operational testing began in mid-2002, which was completed in April 2003. In October 2003, the JASSM was declared fully operational.

During the test phase, the JASSM often showed only a low level of reliability, which is why there were many delays and budget problems. The main problem was often the new, particularly interference-free GPS receiver. Further funds have therefore been granted to increase reliability. During the tests carried out in 2009 on the correspondingly modified seventh construction lot, 15 out of 16 guided missiles were fired.

technology

The JASSM primarily navigates with its GPS / INS system, whereby great importance was attached to interference immunity with the GPS receiver. To improve precision, a FLIR sensor (256 × 256 pixels , 3–5 microns ) is activated on the final approach , which uses pattern recognition to search a specific area for the target. This also makes it possible to combat targets with limited mobility. A large number of waypoints can also be defined.

The JASSM airframe consists entirely of composite materials and is primarily geared towards a low radar and infrared signature. In contrast to most current cruise missiles, it has no corner reflectors , irregular surfaces or tubular components. These measures should also enable the bypassing and combat of modern air defense systems (e.g. S-300P or 9K330 Tor ), which were designed to combat conventional cruise missiles. In order to increase the range, the JASSM has two swivel blades , which provide additional dynamic lift . Like the rudder , these are folded in to save space and are only unfolded immediately after being released.

The WDU-42 / B warhead weighs around 450 kg and contains 110 kg of AFX-757 explosives , which has a considerably more intense effect than previous mixtures and is said to have the explosive power of a conventional warhead that is twice as heavy. In addition, the mixture is insensitive , so the risk of unintentional explosions, for example due to a cook-off , is considerably lower than with previous explosives. The detonator has several modes of operation to both surface targets as well verbunkerte to combat and hardened objects effectively.

A turbojet engine of the type J402-CA-100, which develops 3 kN thrust, provides the drive . With this a range of at least 360 km and a speed of up to Mach 0.85 can be achieved.

variants

AGM-158A

The basic version, which has been in series production since the beginning of 2003. The US Air Force currently (as of August 2015) has almost 1500 guided missiles of this type, with an inventory of 4900 pieces being aimed for (including the ER variant). The unit cost is approximately $ 400,000.

AGM-158B

This variant, also called JASSM-ER, should primarily have a greatly increased range of almost 1000 km. In addition, a secure two-way data link ( WDL ) is provided so that status queries and target changes can also be carried out after the launch. The airframe remains completely unchanged on the outside, but uses a more efficient turbofan engine and can hold more fuel.

The first flight test took place in January 2006, the second test phase was completed in August 2012 and the first series models were delivered in April 2014. The Air Force plans to procure 2500 JASSM-ER (as of August 2012).

AGM-158D

Lockheed Martin has been developing the AGM-158D JASSM-D version since 2018. This version, previously known as the JASSM-XR, should be ready for use in 2023. The AGM-158D is said to have a warhead of 907 kg with a takeoff weight of 2368 kg. The range should be around 1852 km.

commitment

Barseh research facility before and after the attack

The first combat operation took place on April 14, 2018 as part of the air strike on Damascus and Homs . Two B-1B bombers fired a total of 19 JASSMs (AGM-158A) at a research facility near Damascus that is said to have been involved in the research and production of chemical weapons.

After the Delta Force as part of the operation Kayla Mueller then- IS -Anführer Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had eliminated were briefly used to, among other JASSMs to his retreat at Barischa destroy.
