Dave Ashman ( 1934 - 1984 ) was an American weightlifter .

Life

Ashman grew up in Norwood / Massachusetts as the son of German immigrants. There he also attended high school and played basketball . At the age of 16 he already weighed 100 kg and made his first attempts at weightlifting , but without participating in competitions. In May 1952 he went to the US Air Force. He was transferred several times and was stationed in Thule / Greenland in 1956 . There he began lifting weights again and made rapid progress in training. In his first competition of his life in 1957 in Daytona Beach , he became - as incredible as this may seem - American heavyweight champion (over 90 kg body weight at the time). In 1958 and 1959 he represented the USA at the World Championships. In 1960 in Tucson, Arizona, before Yuri Vlasov, he was the first person to weigh more than 200 kg. At this event he also achieved his best performance with 500 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. At the US championships in 1960, which were also considered elimination for the Olympic Games in Rome , he could not start due to injury. He also had differences with the American Weightlifting Association, so that he was discouraged and ended his career at the age of 26.
