Alexei Sidorowitsch Medvedev

Alexei Sidorowitsch Medvedev ( Russian Алексей Сидорович Медведев ; born October 9, 1927 in Moscow ; † May 9, 2003 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Alexei Medvedev came from a Moscow working-class family and began lifting weights in 1947 at the age of 20 in the “Krylya Sovietov” sports association. His role models were the "masters of sport" Grigori Nowak and Jakow Kuzenko . Both world-class weightlifters in the 1940s. In his early years in the Soviet Army, under the guidance of trainers Shatov and Mechanics, the officer made considerable progress year after year, but it was not until he was 30 that his performance was so good that he was considered by the responsible trainers at an international Mastery was used. His tenacity and perseverance was then rewarded by winning the world heavyweight title in 1957 and 1958. However, he did not get Olympic honors because Yuri Vlasov, who had come a long way in the meantime, blocked his way to Rome in 1960. Alexei Medvedev remained active until the mid-1960s and then became a coach.

As head coach, he was in charge of the Soviet national weightlifting team until 1972. From 1968 to 1992 he held managerial positions at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the European Federation (EWF). During this time and afterwards, he wrote several textbooks and countless articles on weightlifting.

After working as a trainer, he was a professor at the International Academy of Information and head of the weightlifting chair at the Russian State Academy of Physical Culture.

  • 1960, 2nd place, with 490 kg, behind Vlasow, 510 kg and in front of Vilkovic, 462.5 kg,
  • 1961, 5th place, with 470 kg, winner Vlasov, 550 kg ahead of Schabotinski, 500 kg,
  • 1962, 4th place, with 465 kg, winner Vlasov, 522.5 kg ahead of Schabotinsky, 512.5 kg.
