Evgeni Wassiljewitsch Novikow ( Russian Евгений Васильевич Новиков , scientific transliteration Evgenij Vasil'evič Novikov ; born August 26, 1924 , † October 20, 1973 ) was a Soviet weightlifter.

Career

After the resignation of the hitherto best Soviet weightlifter in the heavyweight division, Jakow Kuzenko , in 1952, two young athletes fought for his successor: Alexei Medvedev and Yevgeny Novikov. Yevgeny Novikov was an officer in the Soviet Army and stationed in Minsk . He started lifting weights relatively late and in 1951 he first reached 400 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. From 1953 he achieved very good placements at the Soviet championships, but only managed to defeat Medvedev in 1957. 1957 was Novikov's best year ever, as he achieved his personal best with 492.5 kg and was also European champion in Katowice . That was his greatest achievement. Overall, however, Alexei Medvedev had the greater successes, because he was even world champion in 1957 and 1958 before he was replaced by Yuri Vlasov .

Yevgeny Novikov ended his career in 1960.
