In 1972 the US Air Force initiated a program to develop a high-flying long-range air-to-air missile . The missile, later known under the name AIM-97 Seekbat , was based on the AGM-78 Standard ARM . In contrast to this, the Seekbat had a larger rocket engine and the original radar seeker head was replaced by an infrared seeker head . The first test starts under the designation XAIM-97 began at the end of 1972. The development of the Seekbat was stopped in early 1976.
