The Grumman F2F was a fighter aircraft produced by the US aircraft manufacturer Grumman Aerospace Corporation .
The single-engine biplane with retractable landing gear was the standard fighter aircraft of the US Navy from 1935 to 1940. The aircraft could be used from fixed airfields as well as from aircraft carriers .
The aircraft was created when the US Navy commissioned Grumman to develop a single-seat version of the Grumman FF . The contract was signed on November 2, 1932, and eleven months later the Grumman F2F flew. Due to the shape of the hull, the F2F - and the similar F3F - were referred to as "Grumman Flying Barrels" (Grumman's Flying Barrels). A total of 54 F2F-1 were produced, which were used in the US Navy in squadrons VF-2B (later VF-2) and VF-3B (later VF-7B, then VF-5) until 1940.
