The NASA Shaped Sonic Boom Demonstration , also known as Shaped Sonic Boom experiment or SSBD was a two-year program that provides a F-5 Northrop E with a modified fuselage used to demonstrate that the shock wave of an airplane and the accompanying sonic boom shaped and can thereby be reduced. It was a joint project by NASA's Langley Research Center , the Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base , California, and Northrop Grumman .
At the time of its implementation in 2003, the program was the largest study of the sonic boom. After measuring the 1,300 recordings, some of which were taken by an escort aircraft in the shock wave, the SSBD showed a reduction in the sonic boom by about a third. F-15B from the Dryden Flight Research Center were used on several flights to measure the shock wave propagation at different distances and orientations in relation to the modified F-5E.
An unmodified F-5E flew a short distance behind the demonstration aircraft to enable a reference measurement.
A glider of the type Let L-13 Blanik the US Air Force test pilot School with a microphone at the left wing tip and a pressure sensor on the side of the hull flying at a lower altitude of 3,000 m under the flight path of the F-5E to about 9,800 m (32,000 ft) to record the sound waves. In addition, supersonic boom data was collected from 42 sensors and recorders on the floor in a field 2.5 miles below the flight path of the F-5E. The amplitude and direction sensors developed by the Dryden Flight Research Center recorded signature data from the sonic boom that hit the ground.
The demonstration was originally part of the Quiet Supersonic Platform program, which was funded by DARPA . The project was then funded by the Vehicle Systems Department of the NASA Office of Aeronautics. The Integrated Systems Sector of Northrop-Grumman Corporation in El Segundo, California converted the F-5E aircraft into the SSBD. The aircraft is on display at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville , Florida.
