The Northrop N-3PB was a single-engine seaplane that served as a patrol bomber in the Air Force Division of the Royal Norwegian Navy ( Marinens Flyvevesen ) during World War II.

History and construction

In early 1940 , the Norwegian government ordered 24 machines of this type, which were otherwise not used in any other air force. After the occupation of Norway by the Germans in April 1940, the machines could no longer be delivered to Norway.

The first flight of the N-3PB took place on November 1, 1940 and from 1941 the delivery to Reykjavík in Iceland began , where the Norwegians continued to fight with the Royal Norwegian Naval Air Service (RNNAS). The N-3PB were mainly used to combat submarines and as escort aircraft for ship convoys. However, they were never involved in direct combat operations with German machines.

Some machines were lost in the Arctic due to the weather. In the 1970s , an N-3PB wreck was discovered in Iceland. This was restored at the Northrop Corporation in California . The aircraft is currently stored in a hangar in Gardermoen , Norway.
