The Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport is an airport in the city of Savannah in Chatham County in the US state of Georgia .

location

The Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport is located twelve kilometers northwest of Savannah and around 40 kilometers west of the island of Hilton Head in the neighboring US state of South Carolina .

history

The airport's name was originally Savannah Municipal Airport and was renamed Hunter Field in 1932 . The United States Army Air Corps was renamed Chatam Army Airfield after Chatham County's namesake William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham Prime Minister of Great Britain . The Georgia Air National Guard , which is still stationed at the airport today, renamed the airfield Travis Field in 1948 after Robert F. Travis an officer in the United States Air Force . Renamed Savannah International Airport in 1983 , the airport was given its current name Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport in 2003 .

The aircraft manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace is also based at the airport . It is approached by airlines such as Delta Air Lines , United Airlines , Allegiant Air and American Eagle .

Incidents

Trivia

There are two grave slabs on the shoulder of a runway. An extension of the runway led through the family cemetery of the previous owners. Since the tombstones cannot be removed without the consent of the family, they were integrated into the runway.
