Coquimbo is a city in the Región de Coquimbo in the Lesser North of the South American Andean state of Chile . It has 205,760 inhabitants (as of 2017).

geography

Coquimbo is located by the sea, south of the regional capital La Serena and about 400 km north of Santiago . The cities of Coquimbo and La Serena merge "seamlessly" into one another. Coquimbo has an important port.

Total solar eclipse 2019

On July 2, 2019, from 3:22 p.m. to 5:46 p.m. (UTC-4), Coquimbo was the city in the corridor of the total solar eclipse. This moved towards the Chilean coast, which was reached about 40 kilometers north of Coquimbo. Tens of thousands of people watched this event on the beach and in the city of Coquimbo.

history

The natural port of Coquimbo was captured by Spain in 1550 under Pedro de Valdivia .
