Mainz Antiquities Association

The Mainz Antiquities Association was founded in Mainz in 1844 . Then as now, the aim of the association is to research the history of the city of Mainz and the regional environment, to protect cultural assets and to preserve historical buildings.

As early as 1823 there were efforts by the district judge Josef Emele to found a history association. The government of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , to which Mainz and Rheinhessen belonged since 1814, forbade this. 19 years later, Emele tried again to have the founding of an association for the research of patriotic history approved. 2 years later the request was granted and Josef Emele became chairman of the newly founded association for research into the history of the Rhineland and antiquities as the association was officially called. The current mayor of Mainz held the honorary chairmanship (and still does today) .

The important members of the early years included Ludwig Lindenschmit the Elder and Nikolaus Müller . Lindenschmit also initiated the founding of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum, which is now known worldwide, with other members of the antiquity association . The association was also instrumental in founding the antiquity museum and the picture gallery, which are now united in the Mainz State Museum . The association's own collection of antiquities and art objects with over 5000 individual pieces was transferred to the museum's holdings. In the preservation of historical buildings, the association was responsible, among other things, for the preservation of the iron tower , the half-timbered houses at the Kirschgarten and, in the 1970s, for the preservation of the Mainz provision magazine . Important members in recent times have included Ernst Neeb , Fritz Arens , Wilhelm Jung and the long-time chairman and honorary chairman Helmut Mathy .

The association has had its own magazine, the Mainz magazine, since 1845 . Middle Rhine yearbook for archeology, art and history published as a periodical , which has been distributed by the Philipp von Zabern publishing house since 1992/1993 . Further activities of the association are specialist lectures and excursions for members and interested citizens.
