Ernst Neeb (born September 8, 1861 in Bischofsheim ; † April 23, 1939 in Mainz ) was a German high school teacher, art historian and museum director.

Life

Neeb was born in 1861 as the son of a railway official in Bischofsheim. He studied classical philology , history and German in Berlin and Giessen . In 1885 he passed the state examination in Giessen . From 1888 to 1924 Neeb taught at the Mainz secondary school . From 1910 he was in charge of the Museum of Antiquities in Mainz on a voluntary basis , and from 1924 he took over the management of the museum on a full-time basis. From 1909 to 1933 Neeb was the editor of the Mainz magazine .

When remnants of the wall were found during canal works in Mainz in 1914, Neeb recognized them as the remains of a Roman stage theater, today's Roman theater at Mainz's south train station . A search excavation in 1916 confirmed his assumption, but because of the First World War , no major excavations could be carried out. In 1934 Neeb retired, but continued to work on the inventory of the Mainz art monuments.

In 1936 the city of Mainz made him an honorary citizen. Furthermore, a street in the Upper Town of Mainz was named after Neeb.
