The International German School Paris (iDSP) is a recognized German school abroad in Paris , represented by the German Embassy in Paris , financially and personally supported by the Foreign Office , and supported by the German School Association Paris.

The focus of the iDSP is to provide the children of German-speaking parents with a German school education up to the Abitur. The school management bears the overall responsibility for the organization and implementation of teaching and educational work and leads the teaching staff. The school administration ensures that all administrative matters run smoothly and that the building complex is maintained and serviced.

history

On October 25, 1958, the foundation for the school was formed with the establishment of the “Association of German-speaking Schools in Paris”. The Foreign Office in Bonn, the German Embassy in Paris, volunteers from private and church interest groups as well as the Austrian and Swiss embassies were involved.

In the fall of 1959, the German-speaking School Association was finally constituted. The plan was to expand the German School into a modern language grammar school with a natural science branch.

On December 1, three high school classes moved into a rented villa in Neuilly, and the elementary school opened on March 1, 1960. In February 1961, it temporarily moved into its own premises at 17, Avenue d'Iéna. In the same year the school moved to Villa 18, rue Pasteur in St. Cloud, which was bought with federal funds. In September 1962, the kindergarten for 50 children opened its doors in two newly built wooden pavilions. The construction of the grammar school with nine classes was completed in the school year 1965/66, the school building was expanded by three pavilions. In the fall of 1966, 460 pupils attend the German School Paris, where 30 seconded and local teachers teach.

Due to the continuously increasing number of students, a spacious new building with a sports hall and swimming pool was built. In September 1970, 600 students moved into the new school building, which was designed for 450 students, a situation that worsened in the following years. In 1977 over 900 students attended the German School in Paris. At the same time, the reformed upper level was introduced at the school , a reference library set up, an orientation level set up and the secondary school branch established. In 1971/72 there were different levels of proficiency in French.

In 1975 parents found the school's friends' association. Class and school parent councils were introduced. In the 1970s the DSP is one of the largest German-speaking schools abroad in the world. The total number of pupils reached the highest level of 941 children in the 1977/78 school year.

In the mid-1990s, the music center, auditorium, swimming pool and sports hall were completely renovated, the outside area of the kindergarten was designed and a modern IT room was set up. Since 1994 there has been a bilingual branch in which geography and history are taught in French. The German and French authorities have given permission to award the German university entrance qualification and the French Baccalauréat at the same time .

The Franco-German music school was founded in 1998/99. There are also German courses for children from French primary schools on Wednesday mornings. In the 2002/3 school year, the total school time at the DSP was changed to twelve school years. The restructuring is expected to take around six years. Associated organizational changes such as B. afternoon classes are developed from year to year. Since the school year 2005/2006 there is a canteen for schoolchildren, teachers and administrative staff. In 2006/2007 the model of the DSP was adopted.

In 1998, 380 children attended the German school and kindergarten in Saint-Cloud , in 2015 there were around 320. The reasons for the comparatively low number of pupils can be found in the declining birth rates as well as in strategic and location decisions by German companies. Significantly fewer German workers and their families are posted to other European countries, and in particular to Paris. On the other hand, competition from the German School has increased significantly through the establishment of bilingual and multilingual schools in the west of Paris.

The discussion about the pros and cons of a purely German-speaking school abroad on the one hand and an encounter school as an instrument of Franco-German understanding on the other has accompanied the German School Paris since its inception. To this day, its history has been shaped by attempts to open up to the French environment and to attract French students. Since 2008, the proportion of French-speaking students has increased significantly.

Today, the school offers a school home to both pupils who have lived long-term with their families in Paris and children who only live in France for a limited time. The connection to the German school system is given, intensive contact with the French language and culture ensures the necessary opening into the French environment.
