Material testers are often used in quality assurance in industrial companies or in the research departments of institutes . You take samples for quality control, sometimes already during the production process, and prepare them for analysis. They not only examine the actual material, but also entire workpieces and finished components for their specific properties , such as with regard to stress from forces and moments or corrosion . They are also responsible for the documentation of the results achieved through the tests as well as the care and maintenance of the various test facilities. The analysis of damage cases also falls within their range of tasks.

Apprenticeship in Germany

Materials tester is a state-recognized training occupation in accordance with the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) and the ordinance on vocational training for materials tester ( MaterialAusbV ). The professional field of materials tester is located in the field of laboratory technology with a focus on physics and chemistry . The training to become a materials tester normally lasts 3½ years in Germany. The intermediate and final examinations are carried out by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK). The profession has 4 focal points:

Material testers are active in the field of materials technology and in particular materials testing , which is divided into destructive and non-destructive material testing (NDT), the latter offering a whole range of additional qualifications.

In materials testing, in addition to the job of materials tester, there is also the job of building materials tester . In practice, the tasks of materials and building material testers occasionally overlap.

Apprenticeship in Austria

In Austria there is a modular apprenticeship in materials technology, which is equivalent to a materials tester, with an apprenticeship period of 3 or 3.5 years. The training is divided into a basic material technology module (two years) and a main module materials testing (one year). In addition, the training can be expanded with a special module heat treatment (every six months).

Duration of the apprenticeship:

  • 3 years: basic module + main module
  • 3.5 years: basic module + main module + special module

Apprenticeship in Liechtenstein

Although vocational training in Liechtenstein is closely based on Switzerland, the job of materials technician FZ can only be learned in Liechtenstein, but not in Switzerland. Theoretical training takes place with 10 weeks of block lessons per year in Neunkirchen in Lower Austria. As in Austria, the training lasts 3 years with the main module materials testing and 3 ½ years with the main module materials testing and the special module heat treatment.
