The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training ( BIBB ), based in Bonn, is a federally legally competent public-law institution and institution for researching and further developing vocational education and training.

The goals of the research, development and consulting work of the BIBB are to identify future tasks in vocational training, to promote innovations in national and international vocational training and to develop new practice-oriented solutions for vocational training and further education.

The BIBB was founded in 1970 on the basis of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) of 1969 as the Federal Institute for Vocational Training Research (BBF). The legal basis for the BIBB, its tasks and organs is the BBiG in the version of April 1, 2005, which has replaced the previous regulations of the Vocational Training Promotion Act (BerBiFG). The BIBB is subject to legal supervision by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and, as a direct federal institution under public law, is financed from the federal budget. The tasks of the BIBB are described in § 90 BBiG.

Part of the BIBB service building

For the preparation of the Federal Government's vocational training report, the BIBB collects the number of newly concluded training contracts as of September 30th according to BBiG and HwO from the bodies responsible for vocational training and participates in the implementation of the vocational training statistics as of December 31st. At the BIBB, training occupations and advanced training regulations are developed in coordination with the social partners , existing occupations are modernized and the list of recognized training occupations is created. The data report on the vocational training report published by BIBB provides information and analyzes on the development of vocational training. It represents the database for the BMBF's vocational training report and provides information, for example, on the development of the training place situation in Germany .

The BIBB is a member of the working group of departmental research institutions .
