Werner Guballa (born October 30, 1944 in Marienborn ; † February 27, 2012 in Mainz ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Mainz .

Life

After graduating from high school, Guballa studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , and from 1966 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . On October 10, 1970, Guballa received the sacrament of ordination through Cardinal Johannes Willebrands in Rome . He was in 1975 with the work at the Gregorian The Jus [jus] divinum the confessio integra at Melchior Cano OP to Dr. theol. PhD ; his doctoral supervisor was the dogmatist created cardinal in 2012 , Karl Josef Becker SJ . Guballa was initially a chaplain in St. Georg in Bensheim . In 1977 he became sub-regens and economist at the diocesan seminary in Mainz. In 1982, Hermann Cardinal Volk entrusted him with the management of the Catholic University Community of St. Albertus in Mainz. In 1991 he took over the parish of St. Ludwig in Darmstadt . A year later Guballa was elected dean of the Darmstadt dean's office. On October 1, 1996, Werner Guballa was appointed vicar general in the diocese of Mainz, succeeding Martin Luley , as well as resident cathedral chapter and member of the spiritual council .

On February 20, 2003, John Paul II made him titular bishop of Catrum and auxiliary bishop in Mainz . He received the episcopal ordination together with Ulrich Neymeyr, who was also named auxiliary bishop in Mainz, on April 21, 2003 in the Mainz Cathedral by Karl Cardinal Lehmann . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg , Archbishop Karl Josef Rauber , who came from the Diocese of Mainz , and the Auxiliary Bishop of Mainz Wolfgang Rolly . His episcopal motto Fides per caritatem ("Faith effective in love") is a short form of a verse from the letter to the Galatians ( Gal 5,6  EU ).

Guballa was episcopal vicar in the diocese of Mainz for the clergy and religious as well as for Caritas ; he was also chairman of the supervisory board of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Mainz. At the supra-diocesan level, he was involved in the World Church, Marriage and Family, Science and Culture commissions for the German Bishops' Conference, and in pastoral care at German universities.

Guballa, who suffered from pancreatic cancer, died of pneumonia in the Vinzenzkrankenhaus in Mainz . On March 7, 2012 Werner Guballa was buried in the bishop's crypt in Mainz Cathedral.
