Wolfgang Rolly (born November 25, 1927 in Darmstadt ; † March 25, 2008 in Mainz ) was auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Mainz .

Life

Rolly grew up as the second of five children in a family of teachers in Darmstadt. After graduating from high school, he studied theology and philosophy in Mainz, Munich and Frankfurt-Sankt Georgen .

On February 28, 1953, he received by the Bishop of Mainz, Albert Stohr , the priesthood , having already on 24 December 1952 deacon was ordained. After being ordained a priest, Rolly was chaplain in Lämmerspiel , Gau-Algesheim , Lampertheim and Gießen from 1953 to 1959 . In 1959 he switched to teaching and was a teacher at the Maria Ward School in Mainz until 1972 . In 1971 he was elected secretary of the Priestly Council of the Diocese of Mainz.

On June 5, 1972, Pope Paul VI appointed Rolly as titular bishop of Taborenta and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Mainz. He received his episcopal ordination on July 2, 1972 by Hermann Volk ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop of Mainz Josef Maria Reuss and the bishop of Münster , Heinrich Tenhumberg . His motto as bishop was Cum Christo trans muros (“With Christ above all that divides”).

Since 1978 Rolly was a member of the cathedral chapter . After the resignation of Cardinal Volk on December 27, 1982, he was elected vicar of the capitulary and temporarily headed the diocese of Mainz until Karl Lehmann was ordained bishop in October 1983. For many years he was episcopal vicar for pastoral councils and for continuing education in the diocese of Mainz. In the German Bishops' Conference he held the office of German “youth bishop” from 1979 to 1986, since 1972 he was a member of the pastoral commission and the commission for schools and education, and later also the commission for media. In 1986 he was appointed dean of the Mainz Cathedral ; he was involved as cathedral curator for the maintenance of the Mainz cathedral .

As episcopal vicar he was released in 1991. On February 20, 2003, Rolly was retired as auxiliary bishop. He resigned his offices as dean and episcopal vicar on April 30 of the same year.

On Easter Tuesday, March 25th, 2008, Wolfgang Rolly died after a long and serious illness.
