Karl Josef Cardinal Becker SJ (born April 18, 1928 in Cologne ; † February 10, 2015 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and dogmatist .

Life

After graduating from the Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne, Becker studied three semesters of classical philology at the University of Cologne from 1946 to 1948 and entered the Jesuit order on April 13, 1948 . The novitiate was followed by a study of philosophy at the Jesuit college in Pullach from 1950 to 1953 and a study of Catholic theology at the Jesuit college of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main from 1955 to 1959 . On July 31, 1958, Becker was ordained a priest in Frankfurt .

In 1964 he was with the work The Justification Doctrine after Domingo de Soto . The thinking of a council participant before, in and after Trento about Dr. theol. PhD . He taught dogmatics at the Philosophical-Theological College Sankt Georgen, from 1969 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . In 1971 he was appointed associate professor and in 1975 full professor of dogmatics. In 2003 he retired .

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him . as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Giuliano Martire in the cardinals college . Because of the old age Benedict XVI dispensed him. of the usual obligation to ordain episcopate . On April 22, 2012 the title diakonia took possession. He did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he exceeded the age limit of 80 years . The 86-year-old died on February 10, 2015 in Rome and was buried in the Jesuit crypt on Campo Verano .

Act

As a dogmatist, his main teaching and research areas were sacraments and grace. Becker is considered an expert on the Second Vatican Council , in particular on its statements on religious freedom and ecumenism , and was involved in the discussion about Lumen Gentium . Among other things, he is the doctoral supervisor of Peter Walter and Alexandra von Teuffenbach . Pope Paul VI Appointed Becker on September 15, 1977 as consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , in which he had been working with the then Prefect Joseph Ratzinger since 1982.

The Pope Benedict XVI. Dear Becker, was involved in the preparation of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification of the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation and from 2009 took part in the talks between the Holy See and the Pius Brotherhood .
